Dormy Inn Premium Hotel Otaru is a conveniently placed hotel in the heart of Otaru. It is one of twelve Dormy Inns in Hokkaido. It is right by the train station and is only a few minutes walk from the famous Otaru Canal, and other attractions. This hotel is one of many in Otaru but it is on the cheaper end of the spectrum. It is on the older side and this is evident from the furniture in the foyer, and on the furnishings in the room. But that aside, let’s look at what this hotel DOES offer. It has underground parking (which has an extra charge), there is a restaurant here and the hotel has a buffet breakfast (which does get quite busy). The main attraction for this hotel is the onsen (public hot spring). The onsen is nice but not exceptional. It is on the smaller size and the outside section is roofed over. The hallway to the onsen is probably the nicest part of this hotel.

The rooms are on the small size and only half of them offer a view over the train station. The decor is meant to evoke the romanticism of the Taisho era (1912 – 1926. Warm lighting with lantern like designs. Again, the furniture here could use a renovation. Overall, if you are looking for a nice bed, and an onsen, then this hotel will suit your needs and at a cheap price for the area. If you are looking for something a little more luxurious, then another hotel might suffice. But this is good enough for a weary traveller in a good location, plus they offer free ramen!

This hotel is located in the heart of Susukino. It is a budget hotel so suitable if you are looking for an affordable place for a simple room to sleep and shower. The small lobby has a work area that has wifi and power sockets. This area also serves as a breakfast spot. If the breakfast is included as part of your stay, then it is free. The breakfast here is pretty basic with bread rolls, and a curry. All amenities come with the room. Being in the centre of Susukino it is close by to a lot of the bars and the hostess and host bars. There are also a lot of restaurants around here. This hotel is probably suited best for those looking for some nightlife rather than families. The staff here speak a little english but not much. Helio Hostel is a good option for solo travelers on a budget. The bunk beds are quite large and provide everything you need for this type of accommodation. There are shower facilities plus towels supplied. There is a thin curtain to pull across to give you some privacy. The staff are very friendly and will assist you, though they are not available after 23:00. They have male, mixed, and female dormitories. This hostel is very convenient as it is right in the middle of town so it’s easy to access all the sightseeing, shopping, and the nightlife. There is an office space on the second floor with a coffee shop on the ground floor.

The coffee shop is fantastic and perfect for those who need a quiet spot do some work, study, or relax. There is plenty of seating with small tables and comfortable chairs or counter seating. Each has a power point which is not common in Japan so you can charge whatever device you are using. Equally convenient is the wi-fi here. There are tonnes of books and magazines in the lounge area lining the walls which are free to read at your leisure. The coffee here is ok, the Hokkaido latte is the best coffee they have here and is very good. They do not sell food here unfortunately. Overall, this is a clean and modern hostel in central Sapporo with a great cafe on the ground floor.

Tabi Tsugumi guest house is a great place to stay while in the area. It is two stories and has both hostel bunk rooms plus private rooms as well. The guest house also has a fully furnished kitchen plus a Japanese style tatami area in which to relax. There are great views of Mt. Yotei from the kitchen and the lounge area. Tabi Tsugumi is run by the super friendly Japanese owner. He does speak English and is happy to help with anything you need. If coming via your own transport, there is parking available here. For those coming via train, the guest house is close by.

The dorm rooms are large and comfortable. There is a female only dorm room available as well. These rooms fit up to four guests. The bunks here are really big and it is a bit of a climb up the ladder to get to the top bunk, but once there you can find a very comfortable sleeping area, private locker, fan, and wall plugs and hangers. Although the room is shared you have plenty of space to yourself compared to other guesthouses. For those who want more privacy, there are private rooms for extra cost. Be sure to book in advance especially in winter as the guesthouse is near all the major ski fields in the local area. this a great option to stay and very affordable and clean! If you are traveling on a budget, the Noboribetsu Guest House is a good option. Noboribetsu is famous for its hot springs and nearly all the hotels in the area are hot spring hotels. This makes them more on the pricey side. This guest house is one of the only cheap places around, especially if you want a day or two sightseeing. It is not too far from everything and is a great access point. This hotel is clean, has everything you need and is well presented as a modern hostel. On the downside, if you are looking for some privacy, this IS a hostel, and the sleeping rooms have up to thirty bunk beds. They do have curtains across the bunk so there is some privacy.
