Hotel Promote Hakodate is one of the many hotels found in central Hakodate. It is along one of the main roads that has the tram lines along it. It is just a one minute walk from Matsukaze-cho tram stop and is directly across from Kankanji. It is also a seven minute walk from Hakodate train station. The rooms here are clean and comfortable. The hotel has 98 guest rooms. This includes 81 single rooms, 11 double rooms, and 6 twin rooms. The twin rooms have nice views over the city. All the rooms have free internet, TV’s, paid video, full bathroom and kitchen amenities, and air conditioning. On arrival, guests receive a free welcome coffee.
In the lobby you can also find the computer corner that is available 24 hours. There are vending machines in the hotel that serve soft drinks and alcohol. If you want to buy anything, the hotel is just a 2 minute walk from a convenience store and a drug store. The floors also have a coin laundry and free dryer. There is one restaurant in the hotel. This is buffet style and serves both Japanese and Western food.

Unizo Inn Express is part of the Unizo Hotel chain throughout Japan. It is perfect for those traveling on a budget and offers comfortable and affordable rooms. The rooms come in standard single, semi-double, and twin bed rooms. The rooms are small but offer everything you need. All the rooms come with full amenities. The hotel being in central Hakodate, makes it close to many of the attractions and is a good starting out point. For those with cars, there is a small parking area at the hotel. This parking is not free unfortunately, and has an hourly rate (though the maximum rate is ¥800 for 12 hours).
The hotel has a restaurant. The restaurant is called Jingisukan Ram-Waka and is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The breakfast is a western and Japanese style buffet. The ingredients for all their dishes uses local ingredients from Hokkaido. There are many restaurants around the area and a few places to grab a drink. This area has many hotels in it but if you are looking for a basic place to stay, then Unizo Inn Express is a very affordable option. Plus, being in Japan, even the cheaper hotels are clean and well presented.

For those looking for a rustic place to stay with some privacy, and away from the main tourist hot spots, the Forest and Tree Village Centre is a nice option. It is not a hotel but a center that has a couple of bungalows to rent. The main building is two stories with two large tatami rooms that can be rented for large groups of up to six. This building also has toilet facilities and showers. Outside of the building, you can find barbecue facilities on the large property here. Here you are free to use these to cook up a great summer barbecue for family or friends.

For a starry experience, adjacent to the main building, you can find the astronomical observation dome. The dome is attached by a walkway to the main center from the second floor. Through the telescope here you can observe the impressive night sky! Apart from the views of the Milky Way, there are fantastic views overlooking the Lake Toya, plus views of Mt. Usu. Adjacent to the main center, and slightly apart from the observation deck are the bungalows. These private bungalows, slightly further down the hill, are suitable for up to groups of four.

The Kanayamakohan Camping Ground is part of the beautiful and scenic Kanayamako Forest Park. This a huge campground on lush lawns overlooking Lake Kanayama. The campgrounds are well managed and kept, with plenty of facilities to make your stay or visit more comfortable. There are five hundred camp spots so its easy to find a private spot if needed, and there are seven small bungalows. On entering you are given some garbage bags plus a a cart so you can carry your camping gear around with ease! Simply find your spot, set up camp, and enjoy the scenery of the lake and mountains.

The campgrounds are the prefect stop over if you are driving from Sapporo to Furano. The park is located just south of Furano and even if you are not camping here you can stop in and check out the lake, the Lake Kanayama Lavender Fields (which are a must see in summer), and Kodokara shrine. The lake is huge and is a fishing spot for some, and there is a canoe activity that can be rented. The management staff are on site from 8:30 to 18:00. The campsite is open 24 hours a day, so if there are no staff, simply check in the next morning. For groups of thirty or more, there is a discount system.

Biei Shizennomura Camping Ground which translates to “Biei Nature Village Camping Ground” is a large camping ground which literally has ‘cabins in the woods’. If you are looking for a peace and quiet with some privacy, this place could be the spot for you! The camp ground has ten red wooden cabins, called ‘Kevin Cabins’. These cabins have two floors and have sleeping beds and bunks for up to five people. These cabins are near large covered BBQ areas that have seating and plenty of room to cook up a feast. These cabins are perfect for groups, families or for couples.

If you are looking to camp, and set up a tent or caravan there is more than enough room. There are about eight different fields from which to choose. Each camping area has a toilet facility. The front office is run by friendly staff who are happy to help you with any needs you have. When staying at the Biei Shizennomura Camping Ground, you will receive discount tickets for a local onsen up the road. The grounds are very secluded and there are many insects buzzing around, but the night view of the stars are spectacular. In the surrounding areas there is the Blue Pond, and a large 400-hectare “Shirokane Model Farm” where you can get a panoramic view of the mountains of Wild Bird Forest, Mt. Tokachi, and Mt. Biei.

Lake Toya has a nice coastal drive around it offering beautiful views over the water. There are many hotels to stay at in the onsen district. If you are looking for something out of town and a bit more rustic, then the Green Stay Lake Toya Campsite might be the perfect option for you. The campsite can be found along the main road around the lake, on the western side of Lake Toya. The campground caters to anyone from families, couples to solo bikers on a bike tour. The Green Stay Lake Toya Campsite’s main office can be found near the entrance and parking lot. It is here where you can pay for your stay. They have camping equipment to rent. You can get a tent, sleeping bag, lantern, table for four, camping stand, cooking gear, a BBQ stove, and gas. The price ranges from ¥2000 to ¥200 for your gear. At the main office you can also find benches, washing machines for use, plus maps & guide pamphlets on the activities that you can do around the lake. With plenty of space, well cared for cabins and lawns, this campground is the perfect spot for a little getaway!
