Hokkaido is famous for its nature and its produce. The Kurashi Store of Hokkaido is a chain of shops found not only in Hokkaido but also on the main island, selling popular items produced in Hokkaido. There are two shops in Honshu, and there are two shops in Hokkaido. One is in the main city of Sapporo, the other can be found in the New Chitose Airport on the second floor. While in Hokkaido, these products make for the perfect gifts or souvenirs to purchase. The goods come from all over Hokkaido focusing on the 179 different districts so there is a huge range to choose from.

The Kurashi Store of Hokkaido has a large selection of sweets, seasonings, cheese, and dairy products to name but a few. There is also a variety of seasonal vegetables. In the drinks department they have bottled beer, teas, and sake, plus a wide choice of coffees to try. At the Kurashi Store there are some tasting tables where you can sample the different blends. At the Sapporo store there is a take out corner where you can try Hokkaido-produced milk ice cream which is a popular treat. The Chitose branch has equally delicious gelato on offer. Otaru is a harbor city, and is popular for its seafood and its glass blowing goods. Away from the coast, up in the mountains you can find the ‘Glass Studio in Otaru’. It is located near the foot of Mt. Tengu, and it is a fifteen minute bus ride away from Otaru train station. The studio serves as glass ornament shop where you can purchase some beautiful pieces. They have bowls, glasses, dishes, and a selection of ornaments. Being so close to the Mt. Tengu ropeway, it is the perfect spot to take a stroll and peruse the store while waiting for the next ropeway cable car.

Glass Studio in Otaru consists of two floors. The first floor is a large space that is full of wares, that have been expertly crafted in the studio. It is here that you can purchase these glass ornaments. They make for a great gift or a souvenir to take home. The ground floor is where the studio is located, and is available for viewing. It is here, in the heat of the furnaces, you can see the glass makers creating their work. It is fascinating to watch them spin, heat and mould their creations. It is just a short walk from the bus station, so drop in and take a look!

Opened in 1873, the Tanuki Koji shopping arcade is one of the oldest shopping streets in Hokkaido. The covered arcade extends for 200 metres and is broken up into seven blocks. It runs directly between Odori and Susukino subway. With around 200 stores including restaurants, bars and hotels, it is one of the most popular shopping areas for tourists. The ‘Tanuki’ or ‘Raccoon Dog’ has long been steeped in Japanese folklore and is the symbol of the shopping arcade. There are also a couple of festivals that are held here during the year.

Factory Renga-Kan is a part of the shopping complex, known as ‘Sapporo Factory’, which is made up of four large buildings. Built originally in 1876 as the Sapporo Pioneering Beer Brewery, the Factory complex is now used as a shopping centre, for a place to dine, and to take in a piece of history in the Sapporo area. The Renga-Kan is located on the western side of Factory, and is a short walk across the courtyard from ‘the atrium’. The Renga-Kan, which literally translates to ‘Brick Museum’ is a three story building that is perfect for shopping for arts & crafts, a photographic spot, and for some fine dining.

The first floor has kids park, the Sapporo Kaitakushi Brewery where you can observe the brewing process. Right by this brewery is a tasting room, where you can taste some traditional Sapporo beers and a great spot for tourists! On this floor you can also find four restaurants, plus a wine cellar with some fantastic wines! The ‘La Brique’ is a gorgeous French restaurant that is attached to the wine cellar. ‘Terzina Trattoria Pizzeria’ is an Italian restaurant and there is a fresh produce restaurant and market called ‘Fresh Factory’. Last but not least is the beer hall, with some hearty meals and beer!
Where the first floor is for feasting, the second floor is for shopping. Here, through the beautiful old hallways and creaking floorboards you can find an array of arts and craft shops. You can also watch the artists creating their works in their small workshops in the stores. There is jewelry , toys, woodwork and metal work on sale. There is also a furniture store, and an Iranian carpet store with some fantastic wares. The third floor is made up of photographic studios plus a ceramic workshop, kids school, and a theatre academy school.

Aspeila is a rest stop, a local market, souvenir shop, and restaurant all rolled into one. It can be easily found on route 230, which is the main road from Sapporo to Rusutsu. Just look for the large sign and two asparagus characters on the main building. It is a great spot to do some shopping for souvenirs or food, where you can buy a whole range of vegetables produced by local farmers. These delicious (and large) vegetables can be bought in bulk and for a great bargain! The greengrocers here makes up one part of Aspeila.

The souvenir shop also sells local foods famous in the area. There is also a restaurant and bathrooms here. It is here, at this restaurant, you can order some great udon or soba noodles. Alternatively, there is a delicious vegetable curry and rice, or a katsu curry (deep-fried cutlet of chicken or pork) that is on the menu. These meals are all under ¥1000 making them good value for money! To get here you will need your own transport, the drive taking about one and a half hours. There is a bus stop out the front, and the buses run from Sapporo station to Kimobetsu five times a day.
