Burlesque style

Located in downtown Susukino, Phoenix Public Theater is the closest thing you will find to a burlesque bar in Sapporo. In its lush interior you can enjoy numerous performances from the pole dancers and cabaret singers while having a drink at the bar or on one of the many lounges. There are two systems available, you can either pay as you drink or customers can order the ‘all you can drink’ plan. All you can drink plans start from ¥2370 per hour and can be extended every 30 minutes. This is a hostess bar, so hostesses will come and join you at your table, where you can buy them a drink. Touching is not allowed. Cash or credit card is available to pay.

Drinks on the menu include beers, spirits, scotch & brandies, wine, and if you’re feeling like spending big, champagne. For non Japanese speakers, the menu and system is explained in a variety of languages so it’s easy to understand. Some of the hostesses have different language abilities for tourists. Although this is a hostess bar, it is also popular for couples as well to watch the shows. Performers will walk around after, where the patrons can give them tips. There is a small food menu available as well. For a night out, and with some cash to spend and looking for something different, Phoenix Public Theater is definitely an option!

Counter action

Sapporo has some really interesting, cool bars hidden around its streets, and it’s just a matter of finding them! Micci’s is a great little bar that is well worth a visit. The walls are covered with posters, trinkets, toys, and photos that give Micci’s its great character. It is not a huge bar by any standards, but it’s cozy and great for small groups for up to 4 people. There is counter seating, as well as a couple of small tables.  It is located only 5 minutes east from the Mercure hotel along route 36, which is a major road running east to west through Susukino (entertainment district).

Micci’s spicy chicken

Micci’s has a selection of bottled beers, whiskeys, spirits and Japanese sake. The staff are super friendly and can speak English. The menu is also in English, if needed, so it’s easy to order. For something to nibble on, the food menu has small finger food, and small dishes to share. There are some salads, deep fried foods (the spicy chicken is recommended), dumplings, some tofu dishes, and some egg dishes. The prices are very decent and the food is delicious. Micci’s is a great little bar to visit.

Sapporo on tap

Sports Bar King Bar is a bar located in the heart of Susukino. It is hard to miss, as it is on the main drag running through Sapporo. It i also hard to miss, as it is a large red building usually with the staff (Japanese girls) gesturing passersby to come in. The bar is divided into 2 sections. The front section is a typical western style bar area with counter seating with TV screens to watch sports. The ‘VIP’ area has TV screens, counter seating, plus booths, with which to talk (and drink) with the girls working at the bar.

Front area

Beer is served by the glass or as a drinking plan. The drinking plans are all you can drink for 60 minutes, 90 minutes, or 120 minutes. Price depending on length and time (the later it is in the evening, the more expensive the drinking plan is). They have Sapporo, Kirin, and Heineken beers plus, spirits, whiskeys, wines, and champagnes. Most drinks are around the ¥500 mark. Bottles of champagne or scotch range from ¥12,000 to ¥65,000. Typical bar food is on the menu, plus pizzas, hamburgers, salads, and steaks. The food menu is extensive. To order the ¥5000 King steak, prior reservation is needed!

Back area

The VIP section is behind the front section. This section has booths and a separate bar area. This area is set up in a ‘snack bar’ style. To access this area, you need to go on a drinking plan. In the ‘VIP’ area one of the girls working at the Sports Bar will pour your drinks, and sit with you. As a note, a Japanese speaker is required for this area and touching the girls is prohibited. Customers are expected to buy the girls a drink or two. So, whether to stop for a quick beer, watch some sports, or have a party, King Star Sports Bar is worth a look.
