Cadillac Fleetwood V12

Bentleys, Rolls-Royces, Porches. Not what you might expect to see while down at the scenic lake of Toya. On the southern edge of Lake Toya, there is a small town known as Toyako Onsen. This area has hot springs, hotels, and restaurants. Here, on the main street that runs through Toyako Onsen, you can find the Toya Classic Car Gallery. As the gallery faces the street, you can peer in and see some great cars. Whether replicas or the real deal, you don’t have to be a car enthusiast to enjoy the beauty and care that has obviously gone into these cars.

The 1987 Ferrari Testarossa

The car gallery is free to get in. Finding your way in may seem tricky as there is no obvious entrance. To actually get into the showroom you will need to enter the large white building next door, and head into the Smile Garden Cafe. The staff here will direct you to the entrance which is on the left hand side at the back. Once in, you are free to wander around and take a look at automobiles here. You can see a 1974 Morgan, a lovely 1972 Chevrolet Corvette, a 1965 Triumph TR series, a Porsche 356, the 1987 Ferrari Testarossa, and a 1961 Mercedes Benz to name a few.

The ropeway up overlooking Shōwa-Shinzan

Mount Usu is an active stratovolcano in the Shikotsu-Toya National Park. Since 1900, it has erupted a total of four times. In 1910, in 1944 which created Shōwa-Shinzan, in 1977, and as recent as March, 2000. Mt. Usu is formed on the southern rim of the caldera which contains Lake Toya. Mount Usu and Shōwa-Shinzan are major tourist attractions in the Shikotsu-Toya National Park. The best way to see the Shōwa-Shinzan peak and Mt. Usu is to take the cable car to the top. From here, it is a 10 minute walk to the viewing platform offering views looking down over Lake Toya, Shōwa-Shinzan, and the towns of Date and Toyako.

Path along the basin crater

The car park to get to the ropeway is just off Lake Toya. From here you can take the ropeway up. It takes about thirty minutes to get to the Observation Deck via the ropeway and after a short walk. If you want to explore further, there is a path that leads further down into, and around, the Usu Crater Basin. It is a nice hike along the path, though it will take an extra hour heading down and back. It is a long flight of stairs down to the path along the craters edge, so bring some water! The path around has some stunning views along the coast. Inside and outside the crater you can see the volcanic steam vents coming through the surface.

Volcano Village

After taking in some spectacular views, you can make your way back to the ropeway and head down to the “Volcano Village” next to the car park, which lies at the bottom of Mt. Usu and Shōwa-Shinzan. Here you can find a half dozen restaurants, toilet facilities, souvenir shops, and information centers, and a museum. The Information center has information on what to explore in the area. There is also an eruption experience room using sounds and images. There is also a theater with a film on the history of Mt. Usu. The gallery, here too, has panels with images on the area.

Swan paddle boats

Located on the southern shores of Lake Toya, there are a couple of places to rent some boats so you can not only enjoy the views from the shore, but from on the lake itself. There are a few options on which watercraft to get. Starting with the cheapest, there is the rowboat which is for two people, where you can take it easy at a slow place. Next is an old style pedal boat (if you don’t feel like rowing), which has a capacity of two people. For groups of four, there is the swan paddle boat, which is fun for the whole family! Lastly, if you feel like taking it easy, there is a motor powered swan boat. The engine is only two horsepower, so no license is necessary.

Rental booth

Of course, if you want to see more of the lake, then there are speedboats that are available to take a tour with from April to November. There are seats for nine or twelve people, and the tour will take you around Nakajima island in the middle offering some great lake views. There are a couple of different courses that are available. Jet skis are also available for hire though a license is needed. If you are interested in fishing, there are also fishing boats that can be rented for the day.

If you want a nice relaxing day and want to go fishing, then there are plenty of fish in the lake. Lake Toya has brown trout, rainbow trout, carp, to name a few. These fish can also be found in the adjoining rivers. What better way then to spend the day on the lake, taking in the scenery and enjoying the clear waters. For boats with engines, a boat license is needed. Reservations are required.
