Tony Roma's SapporoTony Roma’s is a world wide chain that specializes in ribs, steaks and burgers with their signature BBQ sauce. Tony Roma’s history goes back over 40 years and its chain reaches over 30 countries, but only recently has it reached the shores of Hokkaido. Their most popular item is their ribs but they do offer a range of other meals. There is a special lunch menu, and a bar and all this is located across from one of Sapporo’s most famous landmarks, the Clock Tower. The space is large, with seating for over 100 people, so groups are ok. There is a separate smoking section and a bar area that serves up beers, cocktails, and non-alcohol beverages.

The starter menu is varied with quesadillas, hot buffalo wings, shrimp cocktail and potato skins, just to name a few. Of course the ribs are on the main meals, and steaks. Combos are also part of the deal, allowing the customer to test their palate on a couple of delicious items. The plethora of sauces and steak sauces are fantastic. Take your pick of original, bourbon BBQ, peppercorn, blue cheese crust, or teriyaki & wasabi butter sauces! If you’re not in the mood for ribs or steaks, then munch down on a juicy burger served up with coleslaw and fries.

Lots of room!

This BBQ spot is a little hidden paradise for BBQ lovers, and if you have access to a car, its a must! Think of This is an old school place that has its own unique layout that has been around for long time! The set up is simple, 2 long pits down the middle of the room heated with embers. Surrounding these is seating enough for up to 80 people. Its a great spot for small groups. The restaurant is family owned and their English ability is low, and as the menu is ALL in Japanese. The restaurant can get busy during peak times so the staff don’t have time to translate the menu so its strongly advised to have some Japanese ability!

East Chitose BBQ

BBQ goodness

The main item on the menu is chicken, in large cuts. Side dishes of cabbage, rice and pickled vegetables are also available. After ordering your chicken the waitress will place it on a grate over the fire and season it to perfection. The rest is up to you! Cook your piece as it roasts in its own juices, delicious. Though be warned, it does get smokey and your clothes will smell of BBQ after and it can get hot from the embers but its all worth it! And while your eating to your hearts content, you can wash it all down with a bottle of beer that are available in the fridge. They have tea, and water for non drinkers, or for the designated driver.

Outside, there is a small lake so its a nice spot to walk around and stretch your legs after filling up on BBQ’d chicken, beer and vegetables. This place has a really great atmosphere, from the sooted rafter down to the heated pits running the length of the building. There’s something very satisfying about getting back to basics and sharing a meal around a fire like in the old days. Highly recommended!

Welcome!

Also on the menu is the thick and juicy Australian fillet steak which will cure any meat cravings. Finally, and if you have the cash, there is the famous Japanese Wagyu steak. The Wagyu beef (Wagyu meaning Japanese beef), is a delicious marbled cut and is a must try for steak lovers. All these cuts range generally from 200 grams to 600 grams, and are priced accordingly, on the type of steak you order. And what better to accompany your meal then a nice bottle of wine. Red or white are both on the menu.

Local red & white wines

Still, if you don’t have a big budget you can still enjoy a thick steak that’s on the lunch menu. For 1,000 yen you can get a pretty delicious thick steak which is not common in Japan. Comes with a serving of corn, onions, rice, and miso soup. Garlic slices on top are optional. Choose your degree of succulence from rare to well done and let the chef seer your cut to perfection. And for only an extra 300 yen, the curry bowl side order is highly recommended, with real steak chunks in a delicious curry sauce over a small rice.

Comes with rice & miso

Curries are also an option with 3 or 4 different selections of beef chunks in a curry sauce. Last, and definitely not least is the special menu of two types of Japanese steaks. The first being the marbled Tokachi Saibi Beef Rib Steak. Tokachi is a province in central Hokkaido and the cattle are raised on high vitamin C enriched feed which makes this a prize steak. And, saving the best till last, there is the Japanese Black Beef Fillet. As the name suggests, this comes from the Black Breed which is found in the region of Kobe. Kobe beef is THE prized beef in Japan and is rarely seen in restaurants in other countries. At 7000 yen for 200 grams this is the ultimate in prime steak fillets.
