Sports Bar King Bar is a bar located in the heart of Susukino. It is hard to miss, as it is on the main drag running through Sapporo. It i also hard to miss, as it is a large red building usually with the staff (Japanese girls) gesturing passersby to come in. The bar is divided into 2 sections. The front section is a typical western style bar area with counter seating with TV screens to watch sports. The ‘VIP’ area has TV screens, counter seating, plus booths, with which to talk (and drink) with the girls working at the bar.

Front area

Beer is served by the glass or as a drinking plan. The drinking plans are all you can drink for 60 minutes, 90 minutes, or 120 minutes. Price depending on length and time (the later it is in the evening, the more expensive the drinking plan is). They have Sapporo, Kirin, and Heineken beers plus, spirits, whiskeys, wines, and champagnes. Most drinks are around the ¥500 mark. Bottles of champagne or scotch range from ¥12,000 to ¥65,000. Typical bar food is on the menu, plus pizzas, hamburgers, salads, and steaks. The food menu is extensive. To order the ¥5000 King steak, prior reservation is needed!


Back area

The VIP section is behind the front section. This section has booths and a separate bar area. This area is set up in a ‘snack bar’ style. To access this area, you need to go on a drinking plan. In the ‘VIP’ area one of the girls working at the Sports Bar will pour your drinks, and sit with you. As a note, a Japanese speaker is required for this area and touching the girls is prohibited. Customers are expected to buy the girls a drink or two. So, whether to stop for a quick beer, watch some sports, or have a party, King Star Sports Bar is worth a look.

St. John’s Wood is a British style pub located in a prime location right near Susukino station. As with all good British style pubs, St. John’s Wood has a good selection of whiskeys, malts, wine and beer. They have Suntory Premium, Carlsberg, and a local black stout on tap, which are served in half pints or pints. There is also a selection of 10 bottled beers from around the globe on the menu. There are cocktails, and non-alcoholic drinks as well, with happy hour from 18:00 to 19:00 for a cheaper beverage! Pay at the counter.

St. Johns Wood Pub in Sapporo

With window seating looking onto the main street, St John’s Wood is a good bar to sit and watch the traffic walk by, especially in the summer with outside seating. There is also counter seating with 2 large screens for sports plus there are tables for large groups up to 15 people. The food menu also serves up good British fare, fish & chips, shepherd’s pie, and St. John’s very own haggis served with potatoes! Side orders include everything from olives, onion rings to cheeses, nuts and pickles. Pizza and pastas are also served at St. John’s Wood. For a quick drink, a starting pub for a night out, or one more on the way home, St John’s Wood is a good pub to check out.

Warm interior

British Pub Darwin is, as the name suggests, a British/Irish style bar located close to Sapporo station. With its dark wood and leather seating, the warm pub interior is decked out with British regalia, making it a welcome bar to have a fresh beer or a hearty meal. There is a good selection of local and foreign ales served in pints or half pints. There are pale and brown ales, Guiness, Hobgblin, Bodding Tons, and Murphy’s Irish Stout, just to name a few. And being a good pub, there is a good assortment of whiskeys as well!

The menu has plenty of choices for lunches, dinners, or snacks. British Darwin Pub has some great traditional British dishes, such as shepherd’s pie, fish & chips, and haggis. There is also chicken, nachos, sausages, baked beans, seafood, and pizzas, so there is a lot to choose from! Cheeses, dried fruits, olives, and nuts make good finger food for and this bar has them all. After a good hearty meal, the Darwin pub has some desserts on the menu! Located in a convenient place, British Darwin Pub is a good spot for some British flavor.

The Moon and Sun Craft Beer Brewery is a microbrewery located in Sapporo. This bar offers up a fine selection of craft beers as well as delicious foods to go with them. There are 10 types of craft beer on tap plus craft beer from other breweries! You can order pints (450 ml) or half paints (250 ml). If you are interested in sampling the numerous beers on the menu they have a 3 beer and a 5 beer tasting set (recommended). On the menu, each beer has a circular graph with ratings of flavor, crispness, malt, fruitiness, color, strength etc, so you can sample the beer that catches your fancy. Each beer is served in a 150 ml glass. Of course, if beer isn’t your thing, then there are delicious wines (foreign and local), cocktails, soft drinks and coffee!

And of course, with good beer, comes good food! The Moon and Sun has a great food menu which compliments its tasty beverages. Cheeses, pâté, salami, fruits, seafood and breads are all available to compliment any choice of drink. The french fries are made from a variety of Hokkaido-grown potatoes served with a delicious sauce.For meals, then there are pastas, dumplings, spare ribs stewed in beer, and a delicious smoked chicken plate.




The Moon & Sun bar is a great micro-brewery, and a great place to sample some good beers, wines and have a meal. It is nicely laid out and the staff are super friendly, and helpful. The owner works along side his staff and is more than happy to have a chat. This is definitely a place worth checking if you have a night out in Sapporo.

If you are in the mood for some Irish flavor, there are 2 Brian Brew pubs in Sapporo. One in the north of Sapporo, the other, in central Sapporo. Both are set up as a western style bar, with a nice selection of beers, and pub food!

Brian Brew, located in central Sapporo, is an Irish style pub that serves up good beer, and excellent bar food. Naturally, Guinness is on tap, as is Kilkenny ale. Carlsburg is also available, in pints or half pints. Irish whiskeys, cognacs are among the spirits and they also have some very good Italian, and Argentinian wines. Brian Brew’s food menu has some good hearty pub meals. Fish and chips, grilled steak, a selection of cheeses are all found here. It is also one of the few places in Sapporo that serves up meat pies, including sheperd’s pie, which is a welcome addition to the menu!

The staff are friendly, and able to communicate in English. Brian Brew has seating for around 36 people, the upstairs area is more suitable for larger groups. In summer there is outside seating. For those who enjoy the rugby, then this is the place to be. There are 2 large TV’s in the bottom section, that have all the latest rugby games on. Local games and international games can be seen here. Every Friday is lady’s day with cheap cocktails, and on the last Thursday of every month from 20:00 – 22:00 is the Irish Music Session. So, grab an ale, or a whiskey, and enjoy the hospitality of Brian Brew!

Autumn Festival Sapporo

The Sapporo Autumn Fest is one of the newer festivals in Hokkaido, being held for the first time in 2008. It is the last of the big Sapporo festivals for the year. The 4 big festivals in Sapporo come with each season, the winter has the Snow Festival, spring has the Lilac Festival, summer brings the Sapporo Beer Garden , and the changing of the leaves sees the arrival of the Autumn Festival. Autumn is the harvest season, and this festival showcases the best food from around Hokkaido! The Sapporo Autumn Fest runs the length of Odori park and each block has its own unique theme. Discover each, and enjoy the sights and smells of delicious food and drink from all corners of Hokkaido!

1 Chome venue
At east 1, under the TV tower, is the Oktoberfest venue. Reproducing the ambiance of Sapporo’s sister city, Munich, you can enjoy craft beers, from not only Germany but also from around Hokkaido. Native German cuisine, is also served, with German sausages, snacks made with ingredients from Hokkaido, and other beer food. There is also live traditional German music to get into the authentic Munich atmosphere. This is a great venue for beer lovers!


4 Chome venue
The east 4 block serves as the Sapporo Autumn Fest’s entrance venue, and has a number of stalls that offer cuisines that abundantly use Hokkaido’s seasonal ingredients. Seating surrounding the large fountain at the centre makes for a nice setting to enjoy the various foods on offer here. Meats, and wines as well as seafood are available here.
 


5 Chome venue
This section is focused on Hokkaido’s delicious ramen noodles, with a large collection of ramen shops. There are also stores selling food from around Hokkaido, using local ingredients. Along with the ramen noodles, steaks and oysters are very popular! This is a nice area to sit at the edge of the fountain pool area and dine on your favorite foods.
 


6 Chome venue
This block is defined by the huge trees that create a nice canopy in which to wine and dine under. The 6 chome site is made up of stores from popular restaurants throughout Sapporo. This is the perfect opportunity to look around and see the latest dishes in Sapporo, whether it be seafood, meats or gourmet pizzas. There are also a couple of wine shops selling their tasty wares. Sit beneath the changing leaves and raise your glasses!


7 Chome venue
Smack in the middle of this festival is the very popular 7 chome site. Recognizable by the myriad of black tents circling the middle of the block, this site is where the wine flows! Hokkaido’s wineries are set up here so you can sample not only local wines, but also overseas wines which are very popular. In addition to the wine stalls, shochu and whiskey stores are also here. This block also gives you the opportunity to partake of some delicious cheeses, or grilled oysters. A perfect compliment to the wine…or whiskey!


8 Chome venue
Each town in Hokkaido is famous for something, and each municipality has its specific delicacy. People often visit these towns throughout Hokkaido so they can try these special foods. The beauty of the 8 chome site is that all these towns have all set up their food stalls in one block! Take a walk around Hokkaido and try the different foods from these places. There are a total of more than 100 municipalities, treating you to specialties from all over Hokkaido. Each store has a map pinpointing where the town is. This a very popular block showcasing an abundant amount of local cuisine!


10 Chome venue
For the meat eaters in town, the 10 chome site is well worth a look! Here, you can enjoy a huge selection of meats, including venison steaks, as well as crackling pork, chicken and beef. Famous wild game shops have set up their stalls which are enough to satiate any meat lover! Desserts and salads are available to compliment these dishes. There is also a beer stall set up in the middle.


11 Chome venue
Last, but not least at on the 11th block at the end of the Autumn Fest is the world cuisine block! You can walk around and see various chefs from around the world working their magic to bring you an array of delicious cuisines. Foreign wines and beer are also included into the mix. Try some “world travel” through the authentic tastes and talents of every country’s chefs. The smells and sights are a fantastic part of the Autumn Festival. See you there!
