Wood craft goods

Located across from the Hotel Lakeside Terrace, Tōyako Echigoya is a large store excelling in Japanese products. The store is tax free and is popular for tourists and locals alike to admire the handiwork, and to possibly pick up a souvenir while in the Lake Toya district. The shop sells items relating to Hokkaido and Lake Toya. They have been handling and selling souvenirs and they have something for any occasion. A lot of their goods are beautiful wood carvings such as bear carvings, and Ainu goods.

The engraved Bokken

They also specialize in ‘Bokken’ which is a wooden Japanese sword. For thirty years, Tōyako Echigoya has had experienced skilled craftsmen engraving these swords in the shop. There are many different sizes to choose from. The prices of these swords range from ¥3000 to ¥20,000. Other items include confectionary, t-shirts, handbags, and Japanese style teapots and cooking items. Everyday products can also be found here. The second floor of the building has a sweets and toy cafe.

Modern Design

Select 108 is a very large and new shopping area located on the main street in the suburb of Toyaka Onsen. It is a spacious area that is on the ground floor. The select shop gathers selected items from all around Hokkaido and it is here you can find some fantastic souvenirs and gifts to take home with you. Many of the items here are beautifully crafted, whether from stone, clay, ceramics, glass or wood. These pieces are well presented for the shopper to take a stroll through store and peruse at leisure.

Special wines

Among the ornaments and crafts, Select 108 also sells clothing. Here you can find some great Japanese ‘yukatas’ (casual style of a kimono, usually worn during the summer and at onsen hotels). They also sell some fantastic wines, sweets and other snacks that are home to Hokkaido. Select 108 also has a small cafe on its premises, with plenty of outside seating in which to enjoy a cup coffee, or one of their delicious cakes. After shopping, there is a nice restaurant across the road, Toya Arts & Crafts that you can have a nice lunch.

International food festival

The Hokkaido University Festival, also known as Hokudai-sai, is a three day event that is held at the start of June. It is a popular festival for the locals of Sapporo. The event allows the students to show the public their skills and cultural backgrounds. The event is actually compromised of ten festivals which are held down the main street of the campus in stalls, plus some of the surrounding buildings. One of the main attractions is the International Food Festival where you can sample foods from all over the world! These stalls are run by the international students attending the university.

Besides the International Food area, there are further stalls set up along the road. These stalls sell Japanese cuisine, and include games and events. There are student performances on stage, a rock festival, haunted house, and a cosplay event. Simply take a long stroll down the main road that runs through the campus and take in the sights and smells. The stalls run for a few hundred meters so there is a lot to see! The event starts during the first week of June and runs through the weekend. If you are in Sapporo around that time, make sure to put the Hokkaido University Festival into your schedule.

Classic beer

Hokkaido is famous for its nature and its produce. The Kurashi Store of Hokkaido is a chain of shops found not only in Hokkaido but also on the main island, selling popular items produced in Hokkaido. There are two shops in Honshu, and there are two shops in Hokkaido. One is in the main city of Sapporo, the other can be found in the New Chitose Airport on the second floor. The Kurashi Store of Hokkaido has a large selection of sweets, seasonings, cheese, and dairy products to name but a few. There is also a variety of seasonal vegetables. In the drinks department they have bottled beer, teas, and sake, plus a wide choice of coffees to try. At the Kurashi Store there are some tasting tables where you can sample the different blends. At the Sapporo store there is a take out corner where you can try Hokkaido-produced milk ice cream which is a popular treat. The Chitose branch has equally delicious gelato on offer. Whatever you are looking for, The Kurashi Store of Hokkaido has a variety of the best produce of Hokkaido.

On the western coast of Hokkaido, along the scenic coastal drive on route 231, you can find the Road Station Ishikari, and the Atsuta Museum. There are two places to stop at, one being the Ai Road Yuhinooka Rest Stop which is an older building with free coffee and “bentos” (lunch box sets). The Ishikari Road Station is the more recent, modern and larger building is on the opposite side of the road from the Yuhinooka Rest Stop. It has three floors that contains a souvenir store, a museum, a food court, and an observation deck to take in views of the coastline.

Energy for the drive from Ishikari Fumiichi

The small museum has information on the surrounding flora and fauna. With miniatures, small exhibits, and photographs, its an interesting place to have a wander around. For those wanting to grab a bite to eat, there are a couple of food stalls on the middle floor. The ‘Ishikari Fumiichi’ store has a few fish meals, Chinese dumplings, and beers to buy. ‘Home’ is a bakery & pizza restaurant that has delicious pastries, pizzas, and fresh juices available. And the popular ‘Gelato Lico Lico’ sells (you guessed it) gelatos. Simply order your meal from the vending machines and go to the counter. There are plenty of tables to rest, eat, and drink.

Otaru is a harbor city, and is popular for its seafood and its glass blowing goods. Away from the coast, up in the mountains you can find the ‘Glass Studio in Otaru’. It is located near the foot of Mt. Tengu, and it is a fifteen minute bus ride away from Otaru train station. The studio serves as glass ornament shop where you can purchase some beautiful pieces. They have bowls, glasses, dishes, and a selection of ornaments. Being so close to the Mt. Tengu ropeway, it is the perfect spot to take a stroll and peruse the store while waiting for the next ropeway cable car.

Talented artists

Glass Studio in Otaru consists of two floors. The first floor is a large space that is full of wares, that have been expertly crafted in the studio. It is here that you can purchase these glass ornaments. They make for a great gift or a souvenir to take home. The ground floor is where the studio is located, and is available for viewing. It is here, in the heat of the furnaces, you can see the glass makers creating their work. It is fascinating to watch them spin, heat and mould their creations. It is just a short walk from the bus station, so drop in and take a look!
