Soup curry is amazing! It is one of the great Hokkaido dishes. Picante is one of the well known soup curry restaurants in Sapporo. They have a couple of shops in Sapporo, and one other being down in Sendai, on the main island. They have some simply delicious dishes on the menu. So, what what is on the menu at Picante? They have a crispy chicken and vegetables which is fantastic and recommended, plus a grilled garlic soft lamb dish, a stewed Hokkaido beef dish, a premier Maitake mushroom dish, a vegetable dish, a dish from Okinawa using brown sugar, or the ‘Pika Special’ which is a soup curry with tempura soft boiled egg & mushroom tempura. When ordering your first choose your soup type, second step is to choose your meal, and third you choose your spice level, and lastly, choose any toppings you want. Beef curry
Soup King curry offers the vegetable curry, crispy chicken leg curry (yum), pork curry, and seafood curry. But each soup curry store has its own additional dish. Soup Curry King has a beef curry, a beef tendon curry, and if you’re interested, they have a natto minced beef curry. Natto is made from soybeans, and is a pungent favorite for Japanese nationals. Spice levels range from one to ten, then jack, queen, king, and finally the joker (adding of death sauce to the curry). Rice comes with all curries. For a little extra yen, toppings can be added. Soup Curry King as an extra twelve toppings from eggs & bacon to quail & even jellyfish (why not try?). Beers, soft drink & lassis are on the drink menu.

The hamburg soup curry
The Nishi Tonden Dori Soup Curry menu includes chicken, a delicious vegetable curry, the hamburg curry (which is highly recommended), plus a pork curry, and interestingly, a ramen soup curry. There are around a dozen dishes to choose from. The spice level ranges from one to eight. Be warned, though, eight is one of the hottest curries in town. Their soup curry flavors include coconut and a creamy prawn flavor. Delicious! There are added extras that are available to make your meal even more mouth watering. And of course, the drink menu includes lassis, soft drinks and in the beer department, Sapporo Classic, and Guinness!

Chicken soup curry with vegetables
If you are in the entertainment district of Sapporo, and are looking for a late dinner, or one of those extremely late “grab a bite after a night out” scenarios, then Kuma-chan could answer those needs. It is a tiny, comfy restaurant settled in downtown Susukino. It is tucked away on the second floor on the main street, and can be found by its sign on the sidewalk. It is self run by the owner, and due to the small size, reservations are not possible. The menu is straight forward and comes in a few languages, so it is easy to order.

Cozy Kuma-chan
Kuma-chan which translates to “little bear” has two main dishes on its menu. Roast Beef Donburi & soup curry. Donburi or ‘Don’ is a Japanese “rice bowl dish” consisting of either fish, meat, vegetables or other ingredients simmered together and served over rice. At Kuma-chan they have the Roast Beef Don which comes with raw egg, lettuce, and dried seaweed (nori). Mix it all together and enjoy! The roast beef for these dishes comes in 100, 150, 200 0r 300 grams. Kuma-chan also has soup curry. Take your pick of half a dozen soup curry dishes including chicken, vegetable, lamb or the Kuma-chan special. Topping are extra and the spice level ranges from one to seven. Rice comes with all soup curry bowls. Teas, juices, lassis, beer, and Zimas are on the drink menu.

Sausage & vegetables in tomato base curry
Soup Curry Algo is a small soup curry restaurant located in Sususukino, Sapporo. Due to its small size, its recommended for groups of up to four at the most. Run by the friendly owner, you can enjoy a good selection of soup curries that are on offer. The menu is only in Japanese, though the owner will be happy to try and translate for you. This soup curry is located down a small alley and is not the easiest to find, but once there you can enjoy a good dinner or late night feast!

They have a chicken leg and vegetable, a delicious basil sausage and vegetables, seafood, pork and vegetable or bacon, and a special soup curry with udon noodles. For an extra ￥100 you can get extra toppings for your curry. All soup curries come with a rice dish. Beer, spirits, and lassis are also on the drink menu.

Suage Soup Curry is a very popular soup curry restaurant located in Sapporo, near Susukino subway station. Due to its popularity, you can expect around at least a thirty minute wait during the peak hours at lunch and dinner. What makes Suage Soup Curry such a popular spot is it’s unique menu. The menu comes in English, so ordering isn’t a problem. Some of the staff have English ability as well. The menu has crispy Shiretoko chicken, chicken leg curry and a nice vegetable curry.

The squid ink soup base
Apart from these dishes there are also some distinct dishes that can only be found at Suage. There is a lavender pork flavored curry, a delicious smoked duck and mozzarella cheese curry, a fried shrimp and avocado curry, a char-grilled mutton curry, and a special jerk chicken curry. These mouth watering dishes, can be served in a coconut soup, or an interesting squid ink based soup that is home only to Suage Soup Curry. Spice levels range from one to ten. Rice comes with soup curry, and at Suage they use a special ‘Akaimai’ rice which has a red pigment, and is high in nutrients.
Drinks include coffees, lassis, and soft drinks. And at Suage, they offer a delicious dessert for afters. There is plenty of seating, though if you find Suage is too busy, you can try your luck at Suage 2, which is conveniently located next door!
