The beach is located to the west of Sapporo. It is a 55 minute drive from central Sapporo
〒040-0034 Hokkaido, Hakodate, Omoricho, 22, Unnamed Road

There are two main beaches that Sapporo locals head to for a summer suntan, swim or BBQ. One being near Otaru called Zenibako Beach, and the other being Aso Beach at Ishikari. Whereas Zenibako has more of a party vibe to it with the small shacks selling booze with tables and BBQ spots, Aso Beach is a lot more serene with less people. The surf itself is very calm and quiet and not very deep. It is best to bring some form of shade as there are no trees around and the beach can get quite hot in the summer.

The beach is open to camping and it must be said, that the sunsets here are absolutely beautiful. There are stores or camping supplies so make sure to bring all you own gear. There are paid parking spots that cost about ¥500 for the day and not a far walk from the beach. Other places of note include Hamanasu No Oka Park, and the Ishikari lighthouse. For bird watchers too, this area is bustling with wildlife. There is also an Onsen hotel nearby. Aso Beach is a tranquil beach and offers view of the whole of Ishikari Bay.

Tako Highball comprises of two very popular dining experiences in Japan. The first is the delicious takoyaki dish. Takoyaki is a ball shaped dish made from batter and filled with minced or diced octopus, tempura, ginger, and green onion. These dishes are served with highballs. A highball is a hugely popular drink in Hokkaido. It is whiskey and soda served on ice in a large pint glass. So, hence the name Tako Highball, this is a great restaurant to find both. The takoyaki dishes are so delicious here!

The Takoyaki Balls are made right in front of you and they are really delicious! They come with different toppings and come in servings of six or twelve. The toppings include salmon roe, cheese, mayonnaise just to name a few. These dishes a fantastic but give them time to cool down as they are piping hot when served! The octopus balls go well with the highballs served here. Highballs are very refreshing and are a perfect summertime drink. During the warmer months there is outside seating in the Tanuki Koji arcade. Definitely a top spot so enjoy a drink and octopus dishes!

〒060-0062 Hokkaido, Sapporo, Chuo Ward, Minami 2 Jonishi, 5 Sapporo Plaza 2.5 Building 1F

Kobutaya is a small restaurant in the ‘Hug’ dining arcade. There are about seven other restaurants in this area of similar sizing. There are only a few places to sit in the restaurant but there are plenty of tables in the arcade. You can order your meal and take it elsewhere. Kobutaya is run by the friendly owner and this restaurant really caters for tourists who are in Tanuki Koji sightseeing and shopping. The menu is in English as well as Japanese with photos so it’s easy to order!

The menu has a lot of popular Japanese dishes plus some good sake as well! For a thousand yen, you could pick up a nice llunch set. The set comes with a rice bowl, and miso soup. The food here is good and if you are looking for a drink as well, they do serve alcohol. They have beer, plus cocktails and a large array of sake. This is a good spot to drop into if looking for a lunch or dinner while in the tanuki Koji shopping arcade.

〒064-0806 Hokkaido, Sapporo, Chuo Ward, Minami 6 Jonishi, 3 Chome, New Olympia Building 1F

Bar España is a very popular bar located in the centre of Susukino. It is also part of a small chain run by a friendly local businessman. The other bar being the equally popular Bar España Carne. The bar is on the main street that runs through the nightlife district. It is usually full and bustling with those on a night out on the town. They have some great Spanish wines here plus cocktails and beer on tap. There is an ‘all you can drink’ option if need be. The bar is also popular because of the Spanish cuisine served up here. For those who enjoy a good paella, the paella here won an award back in 2018.

The food here is quite good. Other dishes of note include raw oysters from the Sakai family. These oysters from Akkeshi are popular winter speciality at Espana. Perfect to go with both wine and beer. More Spanish dishes include Iberian grilled pork, a classic dish ahijo (shrimp and garlic boiled in olive oil), grilled mushrooms with prosciutto ham, and a Spanish omelette. The layout is nice but small. For those in groups of four or more it is a good idea to book in advance. For couples it makes for a great date spot. Bar Espana is a must try especially in the warmer months with their outside seating. Disfrutar!

The restaurant is in the underground shopping arcade Apia. Located in Apia Foodwalk. The restaurant is only a 2 minute walk from Sapporo station.
〒060-0005 Hokkaido, Sapporo, Chuo Ward, Kita 5 Jonishi, 4 Chome-Apia B1F

The Aunt Stella brand comes from a kindergarten teacher in Pennsylvania, whose name was (you guessed it), Stella. Her fragrant and delicious cookies often won the village sweets contest. Her nephew continued the brand and the Aunt Stella flavor made its way to Japanese shores. Aunt Stella’s is great little restaurant/coffee shop/cookie shop that is part of the underground shopping complex, Apia. Apia is right under Sapporo station so it’s a busy area for shopping and having lunch. Aunt Stella is in the ‘foodwalk’ section as one of the first of many restaurants and coffee shops that can be found here.

Aunt Stella’s has an impressive chain of sixty stores around Japan. There is only one in Hokkaido and that happens to be right by Sapporo station. Here you can get a nice lunch or an equally good cookie! At this restaurant they have some very nice pasta lunch dishes. You can get a coffee and a cookie of your choice as part of the set. But the main attraction at this store is of course the cookies. There are over a dozen handmade cookies that can be eaten in store or taken home. Simply take your pick and then you can order a beverage to sit down and enjoy a nice coffee or tea with a friend.

This bar has been around for a long time and has been a popular spot over the many years. The bars name is based on the Blade Runner movie (based on the book ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?’) The big draw card for this spot is the great views down over Sapporo. The bar is located on the 9th floor with large windows overlooking the night scene, all the way down route 36 (a main street separating Susukino and Odori). The night views plus the beautifully presented cocktails make this bar a popular date spot.  A lot of the patronage here are on the younger side (mostly in the early twenties).  They have party plans and an ‘all you can drink’ option as well.

There is window seating, counter seating and table seating (for up to about four people so not great for big groups). There are so many fantastic cocktails on the menu you can try something new. They have some interesting variations on your favorite drinks such as the mango mojito, kiwi martini, or running with the Blade Runner theme, they have a ‘Blade Runner’ and a ‘Replicant’ drink. The staff are friendly and keep the bar running along. The food here is also good! They have some Spanish style dishes such prosciutto, shrimp ajillo, or fires with chili beans. Electric Sheep Bar is a great bar to check out in Sapporo.
