10 locations in central Obihiro. See map below for access

In the Obihiro area, there is a famous chain of curry restaurants, known as ‘Indian Curry’. There are ten of these restaurants and can be recognized by their cartoon logo. As with its namesake, the curry here is inspired by the flavors from India. The Indian Curry chain has a long history going back to 1968, with the opening of the first store. The original president of the company was an avid movie goer and had a passion for Hollywood movies in particular. All of the curry restaurants have movie posters of famous iconic actors. The posters vary depending on the age when each store opened.

The delicious curry here is cheap and served with steaming bed of rice. There are three kinds of base flavors of curry sauce. These being a beef based curry sauce, an onion based curry sauce, and a potato and onion sauce. As for the servings themselves, there are about half a dozen different dishes on the menu. For example, a seafood curry, vegetable curry, cutlet, chicken, or a beef curry. Toppings can be added for a more delicious taste. This curry chain is well known throughout Hokkaido and in Obihiro you may have to line up to get into one of the Indian Curry restaurants. It is an Obihiro based chain but there are two Indian Curry locations in the nearby city of Kushiro. See the map below. Enjoy!

Erimomisaki, Erimo, Horoizumi District, Hokkaido 058-0342

The Erimo Misaki Tourist Center serves as a souvenir store, information center, and as a seafood restaurant. It can be found at Cape Erimo on the point. There is a large carpark here as well, and the Tourist Center is definitely a welcome place during cold, wet and windy weather. Close by, you can also find the entrance to the Kaze no Yakata (house of wind), wind museum. The tourist center has numerous souvenirs inside. These include mainly animal products from the local wildlife such as antlers from the Hokkaido deer.

The restaurant is large and one of the best spots to try some local seafood while in Erimo. There are not a lot of restaurants in Erimo, so this is a good spot for some lunch while on the road. Being on the coast, there is plenty of seafood to choose from. They have a great sea urchin bowl that comes with rice, pickles and a miso soup. It is costly at ¥3600 a bowl, but if you have the money, it’s worth a try. Other dishes include sashimi, sushi, and shellfish. You can also find some large tanks with equally large snow crabs for sale. These things are huge and aren’t cheap! Overall, Erimo Misaki Tourist Center is a good place, although a little old, to stop off at take a look at its wares, or have a taste of its local cuisine!

Lumbini is a small chain of restaurants that can be found on the south eastern coast of Hokkaido. There is a restaurant in one of the main coastal cities, all on the way down to Cape Erimo. These city towns include Hidaka, Urakawa, and Shizunai. At these restaurants you can enjoy some cuisine with the taste of Asia such as India and Nepal. Many of the spices used in their dishes are imported directly from India and made to perfection by the trained chefs, to give their dishes and authentic taste.

The menu has a wide variety of dishes such as tomato-based, spinach-based, onion-based, and bean-based curries. Lumbini also has soup curries, noodles, salads, drinks, and desserts. The menus at each restaurant are generally the same with set meals and lunch sets, though they each have their own individual special meals to enjoy. Getting There
There is a store in every main city throughout Hokkaido. Check google maps below.

Ramen Yamaokaya is a huge chain of ramen restaurants all throughout Japan. There are hundreds of Yamaokaya restaurants. In Hokkaido there are over thirty that can be found in all the major cities and towns. Since the first opening in 2007, this company has continued to thrive. The restaurants are recognizable by their red facade. The soup at Yamaokaya is made of pork bones and water and is brewed for three days before arriving at the table. The green onions that are used in their bowl of ramen are freshly produced through contract farmers. The cool thing about Yamaokaya is that they bring a special menu every month. These menus are in tandem with the changing of the seasons. At their stores, they also bring out special ramen sauces that can be purchased. They have been doing this ever since they first opened in 2007. The regular menu has 27 different types of ramen to choose from! Their specials on this menu include a premium soy sauce tonkatsu, a premium salt tonkatsu, and for those who like something a bit more fiery, an ultra spicy ramen.
