| Location / Getting There | Otaru dream beach is about a 40 minute drive north west from Sapporo. A car is preferable. For those taking public transport, you need to take a train (Hakodate Line) to Otaru and get off at Hoshioki station. From there it is a 50 minute walk so a taxi would be better. There are two main beaches that the locals of Sapporo go to during the summer. One being Aso Beach Ishikari and the other is Otaru Dream Beach. Ishikari Beach is a quieter and more relaxing place to spend a summer day, where as Otaru Dream beach is a busier spot with more of a party atmosphere. This is mainly due to the fact there are more beach bars that line the sand. These bars serve as small places that serve food and BBQ supplies plus offering tables for beach goers to cook their own food. They also serve alcohol for those to enjoy.

The ‘beach bars’ are slightly run down and serve only as temporary bars and eateries for a couple of months. They are open until the evening and sometimes kick on until late at night. There is also the occasional beach party event. There is no real accommodation around this long beach but there is a camping ground on the beach. This costs around ¥1000 but if you come late, then you can avoid this. Also parking for cars is about ¥500 for the day. There are signs and collectors near the entrance. This beach is mainly for a younger crowd who enjoy the BBQs and although it is not a particularly clean beach, it is a fun beach. If you are looking for something quieter, Then Ishikari Beach is a better option.

Amalfi is a really great place to check out while experiencing the nightlife of Sapporo. During the summer months, this nicely designed bar and restaurant has an opening out onto the street, making it a comfortable space to wine and dine. Amalfi serves as a bar and as a dining space. The food here is equally well presented. They have some really fantastic small dishes to nibble on and which compliments the drink. For oyster lovers, they have delicious fresh oysters on ice, plus dried tomatoes drizzled in olive oil, olives, and cheeses to name a few. If you are more peckish, Amalfi specializes in Italian cuisine. They have pastas and pizzas on the menu. There is counter seating for couples or for those on their own, plus there are booths for up to four people on one side of the bar, and out the back, there is more space for those wishing for a bigger party. Amalfi is definitely worth a visit if you are out of town. You won’t be disappointed.

anda is a cozy little bar in the hustle and bustle that is the Tanuki Koji Shopping Arcade. Manda has outside seating during the summer months and is a nice spot to sit down, have some beer and food and watch the shoppers and other revelers pass by. The beer here is quite good. They have Sapporo Classic on tap plus a variety of other craft beers from which to order. They do have an all you can drink option. Few things to note that this is smoking bar plus there is a sit down charge.
The main selling point for this bar is the craft beer in which they have a reasonable selection. They have Hoegaarden, a Belgian Westmar beer, and Pilsner Urquell which can be found in Czechoslovakia. For those traveling to Japan, you can try some Japanese craft beer here. There are four different beers to sample. The kitchen here serves up some finger food that compliments the beer. They have potato crisps, cold meats such as cured ham and olives. There are also salads to enjoy.

This bar and dining restaurant is one of the best places to enjoy some high quality food and alcohol. It is all located conveniently in town and with seats outside on route 36. This road is a main road that dissects Susukino and Odori. With outside seating (although small), as well as inside seating you can wine and dine while watching the many revelers walking along the sidewalks. In the summer this is a perfect spot. The food here is flawless and the menu has so many great dishes, you won’t be dissapointed!
They have some great little side dishes such as a cheese plate, or olives and prosciutto. Other dishes include succulent meats, salads, and pasta dishes. There is such a great choice here. To go with the food, there is a good selection of wines. If you want to enjoy just a simple beer, then they have that too! There is also sake, and non alcoholic drinks. Osteria is perfect for small parties with the upstairs seating, or its a great date spot with small tables and counter seating on the ground floor. This restaurant is highly recommended.

If you are looking for a cheap and convenient izakaya in central Sapporo, then Shimonya is an option. It is on the fifth block of the Tanuki Koji Shopping Arcade. This izakaya (Japanese style bar), is a popular place to grab a beer. They have a cheap ‘all you can drink’ plan. They serve Sapporo classic on tap, in icy cold beer mugs. With plenty of table seating, this makes a popular spot for small groups. The menu here serves up a lot of pub style Japanese food to enjoy with your beer.
A lot of the food here is very affordable and a lot of it is fried food. You can get some delicious deep fried here on sticks. Goes well with the beer. They also have a lot of seafood here too plus some meat dishes. If you don’t like beer, then there are spirits and cocktails. They have a good highball drink here too! Being in the Tanuki Koji shopping arcade, you are close by to everything, whether it be Odori or Susukino. This bar is a good place to start a night out and enjoy some drinks with friends.

Zanshin is a cool little bar in Susukino, Sapporo. It is particularly well known to snowboarders, skiers, and skateboarders. The staff here are and were semi pro skiers and snowboarders and definitely bring friendliness and some wildness to the bar! The Sapporo classic here on tap is ¥500 a glass (a little cheaper than most places), and the cocktails are the same. A lot of the patrons are regulars and the atmosphere is very laid back and fun. There is some counter seating plus a couple of couches and tables fro larger groups.
There is also a very small upstairs area that has room for sitting only. There are a couple of basic food dishes that the staff can cook up for you. This includes a nice curry and rice bowl. This bar opens quite late at 21:00 and kicks on to the early hours of the morning. It can get busy around 1:00 to 2:00 in the morning. The bar is on the 5th floor and is above the club ‘Riviera’ which is on the basement floor. After the club closes, many revelers tend to head up to Zanshin. This is a fun bar with great staff and cheap beer! A good night out.
