Location | Need a car to get here, the Salmon Factory is a 40 minute drive from central Sapporo. You will need to head north in the direction of Ishikari along route 231. After 30 minutes turn left onto route 337 and then back again to route 231. This large building is easy to see and will be on the right hand side of the road if coming from Sapporo. 1 Chome-54 Shinkohigashi, Ishikari, Hokkaido 061-3243 |
If you love seafood and have a bit of time for a nice drive, head out to the Salmon Factory. It takes about 40 minutes to get there but there is plenty of parking once you arrive. The whole first floor is dedicated to the seafood market. They have lots and lots of frozen produce. They have lots of salmon products. You can buy some really quality and large cuts of salmon. Obviously, the price increases as the size of the cuts does. The store is actually call ‘Sato Suisan’ and many of their products are sent out to their stores across Hokkaido. To areas such as Hakodate and the New Chitose Airport to name a couple. After a little bit of shopping we recommend having lunch at the seafood restaurant on the next floor up. The restaurant is called ‘Old River’ and has a very extensive menu. Old River has plenty of seating but the best seats are the window seats and these overlook Ishikari River. If you want the window seats you can ask for them but the wait will be a little longer. But no matter where you are sitting, you can enjoy a great lunch here for about ¥1500.
Salmon Factory is a good place to visit if you are looking for seafood, some souvenirs as a gift or just for a special lunch. If you want to make a day of it, then after some lunch and some shopping, you should head out to Aso Beach which is about another 15 to 20 minute drive further north. This is a great spot, especially in the summer.

Soiree is a pretty interesting cafe and diner on a corner in northern Sapporo. It is run by a nice elderly couple. Although they speak no English they are very friendly and accommodating. This cafe is reminiscent of those old sixties diners. They have large counter seating plus some small tables lining the windows that face the street. They have blinds instead of curtains which creates the scene. It is not a really easy coffee shop to access and most of their clientele will be regulars who live in the area. They have some nice cafe food here and decent coffee. Smoking is allowed here, hence the sixties feel. On the menu, there are some pastas, hamburger steaks, plus fried chicken and curries. Each dish looks pretty appetizing! This is an old cafe but the layout and style makes it for a cool dining experience. Enjoy!
The coffees here are sufficient. The best thing about this place is the food and the atmosphere. The coffee is cheap and the lunch sets are affordable. You are looking at around ¥1000 which is a good price for a lunch or dinner.

There is only one burger restaurant in Toya and it is Hydune. It is a very popular spot to grab a burger whether to eat in, or to get some take away and enjoy a lunch down by the lake. The staff are very friendly and can speak English as well which is a bonus. They have about half a dozen different style burgers on their menu. The burger set comes with some crispy fried potato wedges and a drink. They also serve coffee at Hydune so this is also a good option to grab one and go and sit down by the lake. The burgers on the menu include an American Burger, a Rich Cheese Burger, a Toya Guru Guru Burger which includes a curly sausage plus the usual paddy, tomato, and lettuce, a Cajun Burger, and a Teriyaki Burger. There are extra toppings that you can add on to the burger. These burgers are around ¥1500 depedning on your choice and will cost a little moire if you want to add extras to it.

Notes | Small anman store, take out, coffee shop, no smoking, part of Factory department store |
Location | The store is in the Factory complex in Sapporo. It is an 8 minute walk north from the 'Bus Centre Mae' subway station. The food court is on the B1 floor. 4 Chome-1-2 Kita 2 Johigashi, Chuo Ward, Sapporo, Hokkaido 060-0032 |
Seikarou is located in the popular large shopping complex in Sapporo, named Factory. Seikarou is a small ‘anman’ take out restaurant in the food court area of Factory. Anman is a soft steamed hot bun filled with either sweet or savory ingredients. Namely minced pork fillings or sweet red bean paste. At Seitarou, the most popular anman seems to be the spicy miso pork bun! Other types of anman buns include beef, shrimp, and crab. All of these delicious goodies are only a few hundred yen each. It’s a good idea to get in early when a fresh batch has just been cookedd up in the large bamboo pots. Once they are ready though, a line quickly forms so get in quick. A couple of anman are a great warm snack to enjoy during a day of shopping. They also have coffee here. And as a bonu, you can keep your food ticket after ordering and get a discount at the Sapporo Factory cinema, United Cinemas.

Notes | Takoyaki bar, highballs served, outside seating, smoking outside |
Location | There are two takoyaki bars in Sapporo and both can be found in Tanukikoji shopping arcade. |
There are two Takoyaki & Highball bars in Sapporo and they can both be found in the Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade. Both these bars are pretty much identical. They can both be identified by their bright red exterior plus they both have outside seating throughout the whole year (including winter). Takoyaki is a fried ball-shaped snack that is filled with chopped octopus (tako), pickled ginger and green onion. The balls are coated with takoyaki sauce (similar to Worcestershire sauce) and mayonnaise. Takoyaki is a delicious snack and the servings hold six takoyaki balls. At Takoyaki & Highball they have many different kinds of toppings they add on to their octopus balls. At these bars they have some unique toppings such as the cod roe with mayonnaise, melted cheese, or fried garlic. These are all equally good!
Each of these tako sets range from around ¥600 to ¥1200 depending on the topping and the complexity. At Takoyaki & Highball they also have other things on the menu besides takoyaki. They have a steak noodle dish, an octopus pizza, and an octopus ahijo dish. So, we have looked at one half of the business. It’s time to delve into the other part of this bar. The name is Takoyaki & Highball and so the drink of choice that accompanies the octopus balls is indeed a highball. A highball being whiskey (the whiskey being Jim Beam in this case) mixed with soda with a lemon slice garnish. It is indeed a refreshing drink and goes well with the food here! They also serve beer and cocktails such as a lemon sour. This is a great place to stop for a drink and people watch.
