Constructed in 1909, it consists of four large facilities. Hakodate Port opened up to international trading. The Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse, over its history, has seen countless people and cultures trade within its walls. The area has changed very little. This area is a great spot to walk around and enjoy the history of the place.
The Red Brick Warehouses are divided into four areas. Bay Hakodate, Kamemori Yobutsukan, Hakodate History Plaza, and Kanemori Hall. Bay Hakodate includes numerous stores, such as souvenir shops, boutiques, tax free stores, art and craft stores like Malaika, restaurants and cafes, plus a wine museum. Kamemori Yobutsukan, as with Bay Hakodate, has an array of twenty four stores including boutiques, interior stores, arts and crafts. Hakodate Plaza has fewer shops, but has a large beer hall with a couple of other stores, and the last warehouse is the Kanemori Hall. The hall is a concert hall that has regular shows on. Mandai Sapporo is a huge second hand store. Their claim to this store is that you can ‘buy anything’ here, and they’re certainly not far off. It can be found on the main road (Ishiyama Dori) between Sapporo and the onsen town of Jozankei. It is recognizable by the two giant, classic movie poster murals out the front. One being ‘The Wolf Man’ and the other being ‘Amazing Stories’. With ample parking it in easy place to drop into. Once inside, there is an eclectic array of goods and products in bizarre little nooks and crannies. This store is especially interesting for those interested in Japanese goods, manga, and figurines.
So, what can you buy here? Almost anything. They have all kinds of second hand clothing from shoes all the way up to hats and accessories and everything in between. They have instruments, appliances, sporting gear, especially for winter sports and fishing. They have DVD’s, games for Playstations and Nintendo. You can find some real old school games here too, so good for collectors! Manga figures, manga, playing cards and replica air guns are also here. There is also an adult section with manga, movies and toys (not second hand luckily). The layout is maze like and this place is definitely an interesting spot to peruse.

The Ugg boot originated in Australia and has a long history, though it is unclear when the first commercial boots hit the shelves. The Ugg boot is reported to go as far back as the 1920’s and was worn by sheep shearers. Also clouded in mystery is where the term ‘Ugg’ comes from. Some accounts have suggested that the term grew out of a variation of “fug boots” worn by the United Kingdom Royal Air Force. Another company claims it is was an abbreviated term for ‘ugly’. Whatever the origins, these boots and slippers are warm! Exactly the prefect footwear for cold Hokkaido winters.
Since its humble beginnings the Ugg brand has moved on from just boots and slippers. At these stores, you can find so much more! They have a variety of boots that range from homely comfort to something more formal. Plus, moving from footwear, they have clothing and even a variety of furniture to adorn the house. There are three Ugg boot stores in Hokkaido and these can be found in Sapporo and in Kitahiroshima. The two large stores in Sapporo are located at Sapporo Station and on one of the main streets in near Odori park. The other Ugg location is in Kitahiroshima (between Chitose Airport and Sapporo city) at the Mitsui Outlet Park (see below).
