Location / Getting There | The bar is located in central Susukino, Sapporo. It is a 3 minute walk from Susukino subway station, located in a small alley at south 5 west 4. 〒064-0805 Hokkaido, Sapporo, Chuo Ward, Minami 5 Jonishi, 4 Chome, Susukino-ju Building 1F |
Sapporo, and its nightlife district of Susukino is full of bars, clubs and restaurants either on the main road or tucked away down small alleyways or streets. Barsamico is one of these bars that can be found in a small alleyway. It is a very popular bar and for good reason! They have an all you can drink plan and the drink menu includes spirits, beers, and wines. In fact, a lot of the decor is wine themed with barrels and motifs around the bar. You can enjoy some good wine here with equally good food. This bar is recommended for couples or small groups.
This small bar has good drinks menu and a food menu. The kitchen here, although very small, produces a huge range of delicious dishes. A lot of the food here is perfect for a bar sitting and compliments the drink. They have olives, cheeses, prosciutto, pâté, plus salads, grilled beef, pastas, and desserts. It is amazing the small kitchen can produce so much. The main dish here though, is the grilled meat skewers, or yakitori. Sample the dozen or so meats here. Barsamico is the perfect spot for a cozy date, or a for a good night with some friends.

Japan is an expensive country. But like all expensive countries, there are opportunities to enjoy the local fare on the cheap. One such chance to fill your belly is by having a meal at HANAYAGI, a small izakaya (traditional Japanese restaurant) located in the southeastern corner of Susukino.
HANAYAGI has everything you’d expect a bare bones izakaya to have: something from the pickle jar, the deep fryer, the grill, the fish cooler and the fry pan. And a really, really cheap all-you-can-drink menu (nomihoudai/ 飲み放題). Enter through a corner door and you’ll be greeted by the chef busy doing what he does best. Shed your shoes and choose from one of the low tables situated on the hardwood floors. HANAYAGI only employs one other staff, so get your order in quickly. By 8pm the restaurant fills for a frenetic few hours with hungry 20 somethings. The drink menu is pretty standard: Yebisu beer on tap, bottled Heartland and a handful of premixed cocktails. As for food, consider your eating needs covered. With a wide variety of items listed on both the menu and on the walls, you’re guaranteed to find something to satisfy your hunger…providing you can read Japanese!

HANAYAGI is perfect for a busy night. You can be in and out in an hour, satisfied with a belly full of great local cooking. Or if you’re agenda is on the boozy end of the spectrum, consider this your best deal to prime the motor cheaply (think 2 hours of all the beer you can drink for under $10…). For the price, this place has it all: good food, good vibes and good value all in one place. Just remember to give your compliments to the chef directly – he’s a salt of the earth Sapporite, happy to serve the people.

Sapporo has no end of tratorrias, bistros and pubs. If ambiance, flavor and comfort are what you seek, look no farther than La Salamander, located just around the corner from western end Tanuki Koji 7(狸小路7丁目), the covered arcade in downtown Sapporo. A French-styled bistro, this little shop is a cozy refuge from the throngs of holiday tourists and locals crowding the main thoroughfare shops.
The dinner menu offers a variety of reasonably priced appetizers, soups and entrée dishes. During our visit my wife and I started with Akeshi (an eastern Hokkaido town) oysters on the half shell, served with a tart vinegar relish. Spicy chorizo salami came next, which went well with our Pilsner Urquell beers. A thick slab of homemade pate arrived soon after, accompanied by warm bread crusts. I should note that La Salamander specializes in regional French wines, and has a limited selection of pricey beers.
A bottle of Alsace Sauvignon Blanc complimented our next dish: crab and shrimp croquettes served atop a shallow bath of zesty tomato puree. A hearty country soup followed, setting us up for the baked scallop and sea bream soufflé. By now, my wife and I were reaching the limits of our capacity for gastronomic goodness. Upon finishing the wine and our last dish, she ordered an herbal tea and I an espresso. For a final sendoff, I had a cognac and we shared a fudge brownie drowned in crème anglaise. It was sublime.
Being that it was my birthday, we splurged on our first visit to La Salamander. Had we trimmed our dinner by a dish or two and halved the alcohol, our bill wouldn’t have exceeded ¥10,000. One could easily swing in for an entrée and a glass of wine without exceeding ¥3,000. Whatever your budget, La Salamander is recommended to those seeking authentic, casual French cuisine in the heart of Sapporo, Japan. For more pictures, reviews and a map, please look here. Bon appétit!
