The Sapporo Ekimae-dori Underground Pedestrian Space also known as Chikaho, opened on March 12, 2011. The underground walkway runs for 520 meters and is a huge space. This walkway has a few restaurants along its path, a couple of coffee shops, art & event spaces. There are two toilet facilities and numerous rest stops and places to sit down. The underground walkway is particularly useful and popular during the cold winter months. This in turn connects with other underground shopping areas, so you can easily access most of downtown Sapporo without walking through the winter snow and cold.

The walkway has many spaces that can be rented out for use, so throughout the year there is always something going on in the tunnel. To rent out a space, then you can contact them directly via their website. There are four spaces that are available to rent. The cheapest which is 24 square meters costs ¥7200 per weekday and ¥20,000 per weekend. The largest space is 300 square meters and that costs ¥150,000 per weekday, and ¥360,000 for the weekend. With the amount of people walking by, its a great way to exhibit or promote an event! The walkway connect to Pole Town which continues all the way Susukino subway station. In the southern part of Susukino you can find a noodle bar called Menya Itadaki. This place has a unique noodle menu that makes for an interesting dining experience. These Chinese noodles in a spicy soup have a real subtle taste that is full of flavor. The main ingredients are all using Hokkaido ingredients. Plus at Menya Itadaki, they use a Szechuan pepper to spice up the dishes which adds a nice flavor. Also noticeable from eating this pepper, is a strange tingling, numbing sensation on the tongue which adds an interesting element to the dish.

These soup dishes are full of tangy flavor and are delicious, plus the servings are a nice sizee. The noodles are dandan noodles and there are half a dozen bowls to choose from. There is the spicy dandan noodles, thick dandan noodles, thick tomato & cheese dandan noodles, a soupless spicy dandan noodles, and a selected Chinese soba and soy sauce bowl. For an extra ¥100 to ¥350 you can add extras to your bowl. Also, they have beer and highball drinks that can be ordered to have with your meal.

One of the top concert halls in Sapporo
There are only a couple of concert halls in the city of Sapporo where you can see some great musicians and orchestras. The Sapporo Concert Hall Kitara is one of the best in the city and is synonymous with beautiful music. The venue can be found in the heart of Nakajima Park which is a beautiful and tranquil spot in itself. The concert hall mainly known as ‘Kitara’ was established in 1997. It is not only famous for its sound, but in the main concert hall there is a huge pipe organ which was built by Alfred Kern &Fils Manufacture D’Orgues.

The pipe organ is modelled after the needle leaved trees of Hokkaido and has an impressive 4,976 pipes. Every year an exclusive organ player is invited from overseas to play. The concert hall consists a large main hall, a small chamber music hall, and rehearsal rooms. There is also a nursery room, restrooms, and museum shop located in the building. The Resort Rooftop is beer garden that is open only during the summer. It is arguably one of the best ways to enjoy one of the many beer gardens spotted around the city during the warmer months. It is a great spot for groups especially as it is spacious, and in the open air it is a relaxing spot to enjoy a beer and some food. Unlike other beer gardens, reservations are needed. Without a reservation, you cannot enter the garden. And unlike other beer gardens, there is an ‘all you can drink’ only. For a set rate of two hours, you can drink as much as you want.

The beer garden up on the roof of the eleventh floor is divided into different sections. There is table seating under a tent which has heating. For an extra ¥500 there is a comfortable sofa area (which is recommended), and for an extra ¥1000 you can reserve the VIP area which has sofa seats, a heater, and is under cover. There is also a drinking booth where there are three kinds of beers, cocktails and soft drinks. In terms of food, you can order a mixed BBQ, a a Ghengis Khan course, or a Samgyeopsal course with grilled meat. The food you cook yourself over an open BBQ at your table. Of course, if you just want to drink, then just order the flat all you can drink course!

While in Sapporo and looking for some Japanese food for dinner and lunch, Umi E provides some good Japanese dishes to get into. The restaurant name ‘Umi E’ translates to ‘To the Sea’ and this restaurant/izakaya definitely has a lot of seafood to choose from. There are two locations in Sapporo. The first and larger restaurant can be found in Apia West which is on the basement walkway between Sapporo station and the Sapporo subway station. The other Umi E, is in the entertainment district of Susukino. Both of these restaurants are set up in traditional Japanese style which has a nice feel when dining.

Although the menu is Japanese, it has pictures showing each item so its not too difficult to order! The menu at Umi E is pretty vast so there is something for everyone. Their set meals are a good idea as you can sample a bit of everything so these are recommended. The seafood menu includes sushi, sashimi, crab, shellfish and fish which come in the meal though can be ordered separately. Apart from the seafood, they have salads and meat dishes, plus noodle dishes, tempura and soups. The drink menu has alcahol and soft drinks. So, for some nice traditional Japanese food, Umi E is an izakaya worth checking out.

Mos Burger is a huge fast food restaurant chain that is second only to MacDonalds in Japan. It first opened its stores back in 1972, and now has stores overseas in half a dozen countries including Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia, and South Korea. The ‘Mos’ in Mos Burger stands for Mountain, Ocean, and Sun. In Hokkaido there are hundreds of stores throughout, with at least one store in every main city and town. The burgers at Mos Burger are pretty simple and are a favorite for locals who enjoy dropping in for a quick meal.

The menu at Mos Burger is written in English as well as Japanese, and you’ll find most of the staff have some English ability. The burgers here cost slightly more than other fast food restaurants but they have a large menu range. There are twenty different types of burgers including beef, chicken, seafood, and pork. They have an interesting salad burger which has a lettuce wrap instead of burger buns which is unique to Mos Burger. They also have a soy burgers which are made with mainly soy protein. Side dishes include french fries, onion rings, chicken nuggets and fried chicken. Drinks include soda and milkshakes. Plus, there are kids toys that come with some of the sets.
