Mos Burger is a huge fast food restaurant chain that is second only to MacDonalds in Japan. It first opened its stores back in 1972, and now has stores overseas in half a dozen countries including Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia, and South Korea. The ‘Mos’ in Mos Burger stands for Mountain, Ocean, and Sun. In Hokkaido there are hundreds of stores throughout, with at least one store in every main city and town. The burgers at Mos Burger are pretty simple and are a favorite for locals who enjoy dropping in for a quick meal.

The menu at Mos Burger is written in English as well as Japanese, and you’ll find most of the staff have some English ability. The burgers here cost slightly more than other fast food restaurants but they have a large menu range. There are twenty different types of burgers including beef, chicken, seafood, and pork. They have an interesting salad burger which has a lettuce wrap instead of burger buns which is unique to Mos Burger. They also have a soy burgers which are made with mainly soy protein. Side dishes include french fries, onion rings, chicken nuggets and fried chicken. Drinks include soda and milkshakes. Plus, there are kids toys that come with some of the sets.

In the hills of west Sapporo, there are some nice little cafes offering views over Sapporo. Nollys Botanical Cafe is one of these coffee shops. It is a nice comfortable cafe with nice views through its large windows. It is on the second floor above a flower and crafts store. Nollys also serves as a shop selling up art & crafts, garden goods, and flower products called Nollys/Araza. It is an especially nice cafe to visit in the spring and summer time with its outdoor seating. It also makes for the perfect stop in, especially if you have been to the Horomitoge Lavender Gardens which are around the other side of Asahiyama Park.

The menu is in English as well as Japanese, making it easy to order for those traveling. They have various coffees to choose (both ice and hot) which you can enjoy on their own or with one of the dishes from the food menu. They have half a dozen dishes which include a spicy baked curry, a home made quiche, and a pasta lunch. These lunches can come in a set, and for an extra ¥400 you can get drink plus a dessert. These delicious dishes are served with a soup or a salad. Nollys is a great place to have a coffee and to do a little shopping for some nicely designed handmade crafts.

In Sapporo, in the entertainment district of Susukino there is a cozy little restaurant that has a menu full of delicious dishes! The term ‘Dosanko’ is used for people born and raised in Hokkaido. The restaurant is quite small so it is not always easy to get a seat (especially for groups). It is run by two ‘dosanko’ staff who are very friendly and take a real pride in their food. For such a small restaurant, they really pack an extensive menu that will please any guest. The dishes are predominantly Italian, though they do have some French and Spanish thrown in for good measure.

The food menu has some great appetizers and snacks including home made pickles, plus olives, chicken liver pate, a cheese or salami platter, shrimp ahijo, and also a highly recommended beef served under a red wine stew. For more traditional Italian dishes, you can’t go wrong with their selection of pasta dishes. Plus they have risottos, and of course some pizza dishes. They serve up a mouth watering Chicken Genovese pizza. The drink menu has some delicious wines as well as beer, whiskey, spirits and non-alcoholic drinks. NAC Niseko Adventure is a hugely popular outdoor adventure company. Their main building can be found in the centre of Niseko and it is here where you can find JoJo’s. JoJo’s is a restaurant and coffee shop that is a great place to sit down and enjoy a lunch, or dinner, with friends and family after a days activities whether it be summer or winter. On the menu they have some truly juicy hamburgers. They have an original, bacon & cheese, or a salsa burger to wrap your teeth around! They also have a taco & rice to try.

Of course, if you just want to relax, then take a seat and enjoy the coffees and teas. During the warmer months they have outside seating where you can take in the surrounding views. If you are in a group, JoJo’s has a course meals that are perfect for parties and gatherings (reservations required). Lake Toya is a beautiful lake which is a two hour drive south of Sapporo. This scenic area has plenty of camp grounds and hotels. On the northern side of the lake, you can find a great coffee shop which is perfect for a lunch or early dinner. The cafe is across from the Tourist Information Centre, and is also a small walk from the Ko Park Camping Ground making it a popular spot for campers as well as those stopping in for a bite, or a nice cup of coffee. During the warmer season, Cafe Lake Toya has outside seating so you can enjoy scenery.

The lunch menu, which runs until three thirty in the afternoon, has a nice selection of delicious dishes. While in the scenic town of Furano there are a few restaurants around to check out. Across from the souvenir and food plaza called Furano Marche you can find Suzukake. Suzukake is a nice restaurant that serves up some delicious Japanese dishes using fresh produce from the surrounding areas. There is a nice selection of vegetable and meat dishes plus some succulent seafood dishes which is what Hokkaido cuisine is famous for. This restaurant has seating for couples and small groups. For larger parties, there is a private room that can be hired out plus a special set menu.

The extensive menu has various Japanese cuisine such as tempura, soba noodles, nigiri sushi, shrimp and cutlet curries, a Furano pork dish, grilled fish, and a delicious Furano vegetable and omelette curry. The servings are large and will please any customer. If you are looking for something to go with your meal, then Suzukake has an equally extensive drink menu. Local beers, sochu, whiskey and a dozen sakes from Hokkaido are all on the menu. Soft drinks are also available. While in Furano, and looking for a Japanese lunch or dinner, Suzukake is a great option.
