The Aunt Stella brand comes from a kindergarten teacher in Pennsylvania, whose name was (you guessed it), Stella. Her fragrant and delicious cookies often won the village sweets contest. Her nephew continued the brand and the Aunt Stella flavor made its way to Japanese shores. Aunt Stella’s is great little restaurant/coffee shop/cookie shop that is part of the underground shopping complex, Apia. Apia is right under Sapporo station so it’s a busy area for shopping and having lunch. Aunt Stella is in the ‘foodwalk’ section as one of the first of many restaurants and coffee shops that can be found here.

Aunt Stella’s has an impressive chain of sixty stores around Japan. There is only one in Hokkaido and that happens to be right by Sapporo station. Here you can get a nice lunch or an equally good cookie! At this restaurant they have some very nice pasta lunch dishes. You can get a coffee and a cookie of your choice as part of the set. But the main attraction at this store is of course the cookies. There are over a dozen handmade cookies that can be eaten in store or taken home. Simply take your pick and then you can order a beverage to sit down and enjoy a nice coffee or tea with a friend.

The store is located in Sapporo underground shopping arcade, Aurora town. It is only a 3 minute walk from Odori subway station, near TV Tower.

Saja Garden is a Korean restaurant in central Sapporo. It can be found amid the hustle and bustle of Aurora Town directly under Odori Park. Aurora town is a busy underground shopping arcade that links in with the Chikako Underground Tunnel, Odori Subway station, and has access to Odori Park. This restaurant is among half a dozen other restaurants in the arcade. The inside is a comfortable, though the space is small and hence not great for large groups, and there are many Korean favorite dishes to choose from. It is also part of the Ginza Lion restaurant chain.

The restaurant is actually placed right next to a Ginza Lion restaurant and is part of this store. Due to this, the alcohol served here is in par with the Ginza brand, which means Sapporo classic or Ebisu. In terms of food you can find Korean classics such as ‘bibimbap’ (white rice topped with sautéed and seasoned vegetables, kimchi and a raw egg), ‘koopa’ ( a spicy soup rice dish), and ‘sundubu jigai’ (a stew made with soft tofu). They also have cold noodles as well as ramen noodles. There is not a huge selection of dishes open the menu, but all of the meals are served in hot stone bowls to add to the dining experience. The price here is reasonable.

In the city of Sapporo, if you are in search of a quiet place to grab a quick bite to eat you can try out Arinko Onigiri. There are six Arinko shops in Sapporo. You can find them in popular spots such as Sapporo Station, the popular Sitatte, the Pole Town shopping walkway, or Aurora Town to name a few. An ‘Onigiri’ is simply a rice ball. It is steamed rice wrapped in dried seaweed (nori) and is usually molded into a triangle shape or oval shape. Within the center of the rice the onigiri has various fillings. Onigiri has an ancient history. It was during the Heian period (794-1185), balls of rice called tonjiki were eaten on picnics and while traveling. Onigiri was traditionally stuffed with umeboshi.

Originally, these rice balls were often wrapped in dried bamboo sheathes for handling while on the move. The custom of covering them in dried nori started around the mid-1800s. Since the umeboshi days, you can find a plethora of fillings such as salmon, cheese, cod roe, egg, pork, and numerous fish. With all this mind, take some time out to enjoy this quick snack that goes back hundreds of years. At Arino Onigiri you can munch down on some nice (and cheap) Onigiri. These are served with piping hot miso soup, making for a delicious paring.

Dan Ryū Chinese is a chain of mandarin restaurants mainly in the city of Sapporo. They also have a restaurant in Asahikawa and Kushiro, one a piece. The company was first established in 2002 and since then, the company has grown not only in Hokkaido but have spread out to the main island of Honshu. These restaurants are popular (especially during lunch time) as they have large set meals. For the volume of food served, it is well worth the price.

If you are around Odori Park taking in the sights and are looking for a place for lunch or dinner, then you can find some fantastic Asian cuisine at Asia-Tei Trang Tron. It is here you can find some of your favorite dishes from Asia, especially from the south east. They have some great Thai dishes such as Poo Pad Pong Garee (king crab curry), or Kai Yang (Thai Chicken Grill). Other dishes come from Vietnam, but what makes this restaurant so great is its Asian fusion. Tom Yum Kung with shrimp and Maitake mushrooms is a must try!

The interior is cozy and comfortable and the dishes are beautifully presented. And what better way to add to that fresh spring and summer food then with some cold imported beer. They have Singha (Thailand), Tiger (Singapore), Purpapar (Vietnam), or Pintan (Indonesia). For those in groups, they do have a party plan which includes a nomihodai (all you can drink) plan. There are two types of party plans. One party plan comes with a nomihodai and seven dishes for ¥5500 per person. The other has eight dishes and costs ¥6500 per person. There is some great food here with a  great fusion of Japanese and Southeast Asian cuisine!
