Located in the centre of Hokkaido, you can find the province of Shimukappu. The small town of Shimukappu is surrounded by two rivers, the Mukawa River and the Soshubetsu River. The town of Shimukappu is along the Doto Expressway and is located at a crossroads so it sees a fair amount of traffic passing through. There is only one supermarket in the town and it is the Yokokawa Supermarket. The supermarket can be found across from the Shimukappu Village Office and can be easily recognized by the historical clock tower on the roof.

If you are stopping in and need a place to stock up on supplies, then this supermarket to be. There are many campgrounds around in the summer or even if you are staying at a hotel in the surrounding areas, this supermarket has a lot of produce to choose from. They have a wide selection of fresh foods, such as fresh fish as well as daily necessities. They have a large corner stocked with wine, spirits, and beer. In summer, there are outdoor goods such as charcoal, and other barbecue gear. being the only grocery store in the wide area, it is a cheap place to get your supplies!

The Forest Shopping Centre is convenient spot that can be found in the centre of Furano. In the city of Furano there are many great restaurants to visit, but if you are camping in one of the many campgrounds in the area and looking to stock up on some supplies, or even just some snacks for the road, then the Forest Shopping Centre is extremely convenient. The centre is made up of two stories. The ground floor is the main supermarket. It is here you can grab supplies and groceries. During the warmer months, they have a lot of local produce including delicious melons.

The top floor has a few stores including a Japanese restaurant. The restaurant, Shiki No Megumi, is a delicious place where you can stop in and have a delicious lunch after shopping. The menu includes some Japanese dishes of soba noodles, tempura, and seafood, all at a fair price. The Forest Shopping centre, also has an ATM on the ground floor which is very handy and can be set to English if need be. There is ample parking at the centre for 250 cars.  Also, if you are looking for cooking gear, outside supplies, or even household items, there is a Homac right next door!

Furano Marche is a small plaza that is home to twenty different shops, eateries and restaurants. Furano Marche serves as a popular tourist spot where you can pick up some great souvenirs, buy some local produce to take home to the kitchen, or take a rest and enjoy a quick feed on some local popular fare.  It is conveniently located in the centre of the small town of Furano, and is a stones throw away from Furano station, and Furano shrine. If you are driving in, there is ample parking to be found. Furano marche makes a great spot to include on your travels in the area.

Furano Marche is separated into two different sections, Furano Marche 1 and Furano March 2. They are located on two parallel blocks separated by a small road. Furano Marche 1 has an open plaza in the centre, whereas Marche 2 is a larger building complex. Furano Marche 1 includes a mouth watering burger shop, a cafe, a fresh bread store, a takoyaki (fried octopus snack) shop, a fruit juice counter, a local produce store and souvenir store. The larger building of Marche 2 has a flower store, local souvenir store, a rice ball eatery to take out, a local restaurant, a grocery store, a ramen restaurant,  and an ice-sundae eatery.

The island of Hokkaido is a beautiful place that is famous for its food, ski fields and countryside. Local wines for sale

The Toyako Onsen district is famous for its onsens (hot springs), and its beautiful views of Lake Toya. Lake Toya is a popular spot for tourists and there are plenty of places to buy souvenirs. When it comes to buying something alcoholic to savor, then this is a nice little shop to check out. If you are looking for some good local wine, then you can find Tomiyama Wine Shop, a small local liquor store that is located on the main street that runs through the middle of town. It’s run by one of the locals and has been in the town for a long time. It is here you can walk among the spirits and wines and peruse at your leisure.

Plum wine

There are other souvenir spots to pick up a treat in town, such as Select 108, which also has local wines among other things. But there is something nice about getting down to the roots of a small town, finding not only locally produced wines, but also Japanese sake, and other locally produced spirits. The Tomiyama Wine Shop also sells plum wine, known as ‘Umeshu’, which is a delicious drink. It has a sweet and sour flavor with a fruity aroma and is worth a purchase. If you are looking for something with more of a heated bite, then the wine shop also has Japanese whiskeys, as well as overseas brands.

Everything you need

MaxValu is a huge chain of supermarket stores that can be found in a dozen cities and towns throughout Hokkaido. Some of its stores are also known as ‘The Big’. MaxValu was first established back in March 1961. With around ninety stores throughout Hokkaido, and employing over a thousand people, they are one of the main supermarket chains on the island. the stores are generally the same across the board, opening from around 7:00 to 8:00 and close at 21:00 or 22:00 at the earliest. Some stores are open 24 hours.

Some grocery shopping

These supermarkets are mostly set out the same. You can find an ATM at the entrance to the stores, which is convenient for its customers. They also have parking, wheelchair access (barrier free), delivery service, and a rechargeable smart card called ‘Waon’. The ‘Waon’ card is a Japanese electronic money system introduced by the Aeon company in April 2007. Cashiers will always ask if you have a points card when making your payment. Also, you will need to ask the cashier for a plastic bag (if you have no bag) at the cost of an extra ¥1 or ¥2.
