The Forest Shopping Centre is convenient spot that can be found in the centre of Furano. In the city of Furano there are many great restaurants to visit, but if you are camping in one of the many campgrounds in the area and looking to stock up on some supplies, or even just some snacks for the road, then the Forest Shopping Centre is extremely convenient. The centre is made up of two stories. The ground floor is the main supermarket. It is here you can grab supplies and groceries. During the warmer months, they have a lot of local produce including delicious melons.

The top floor has a few stores including a Japanese restaurant. The restaurant, Shiki No Megumi, is a delicious place where you can stop in and have a delicious lunch after shopping. The menu includes some Japanese dishes of soba noodles, tempura, and seafood, all at a fair price. The Forest Shopping centre, also has an ATM on the ground floor which is very handy and can be set to English if need be. There is ample parking at the centre for 250 cars.  Also, if you are looking for cooking gear, outside supplies, or even household items, there is a Homac right next door!

Furano Shrine is a Shinto shrine can be found in central Furano along route 38. It was originally constructed in 1902 by the pioneers who had settled in the area. The grounds are a peaceful place to walk around and enjoy the architecture and the many trees. To one side of the main shrine, you can find two smaller shrines, Konpira Shrine and Inari Shrine. The path to these two small shrines passes under three red torii (Japanese gates). This area is a good spot to get some great photos of some Japanese culture, especially for those traveling!

The grounds are a nice spot to walk around as they have various statues including the lion dog guardians (komainu) plotted around the shrines. There is also a dirt sumo ring that is interesting to have a look at and to get some more photos, plus a chōzubachi (water basin to wash hands). It is conveniently located whether walking from the station or for driving, as they have a small parking area. While in the town of Furano, why not stop in to Furano Marche which is close by, pick up some lunch and take a walk down to the shrine!

Furano Marche is a small plaza that is home to twenty different shops, eateries and restaurants. Furano Marche serves as a popular tourist spot where you can pick up some great souvenirs, buy some local produce to take home to the kitchen, or take a rest and enjoy a quick feed on some local popular fare.  It is conveniently located in the centre of the small town of Furano, and is a stones throw away from Furano station, and Furano shrine. If you are driving in, there is ample parking to be found. Furano marche makes a great spot to include on your travels in the area.

Furano Marche is separated into two different sections, Furano Marche 1 and Furano March 2. They are located on two parallel blocks separated by a small road. Furano Marche 1 has an open plaza in the centre, whereas Marche 2 is a larger building complex. Furano Marche 1 includes a mouth watering burger shop, a cafe, a fresh bread store, a takoyaki (fried octopus snack) shop, a fruit juice counter, a local produce store and souvenir store. The larger building of Marche 2 has a flower store, local souvenir store, a rice ball eatery to take out, a local restaurant, a grocery store, a ramen restaurant,  and an ice-sundae eatery.

While in the scenic town of Furano there are a few restaurants around to check out. Across from the souvenir and food plaza called Furano Marche you can find Suzukake. Suzukake is a nice restaurant that serves up some delicious Japanese dishes using fresh produce from the surrounding areas. There is a nice selection of vegetable and meat dishes plus some succulent seafood dishes which is what Hokkaido cuisine is famous for. This restaurant has seating for couples and small groups. For larger parties, there is a private room that can be hired out plus a special set menu.

The extensive menu has various Japanese cuisine such as tempura, soba noodles, nigiri sushi, shrimp and cutlet curries, a Furano pork dish, grilled fish, and a delicious Furano vegetable and omelette curry. The servings are large and will please any customer. If you are looking for something to go with your meal, then Suzukake has an equally extensive drink menu. Local beers, sochu, whiskey and a dozen sakes from Hokkaido are all on the menu. Soft drinks are also available. While in Furano, and looking for a Japanese lunch or dinner, Suzukake is a great option.

Tomita Farm is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Furano, and is one of the top spots during the spring and summer. It is a huge area that is divided into different fields of stunning flowers, souvenir shops and food stalls. Whether getting to the farm via car, bus, or train you can spend a couple of hours here enjoying the great sights! The flower season starts as early as mid April and goes until early October. The different flowers have different blooming times, though the best times to visit the park are around late June through July.

The most prominent flowers at the Tomita Farm are the lavender fields which bloom early and are best seen early July. The lavender field here was the first lavender field in Japan and was foundation for Tomita farm. The souvenirs and the numerous shops sell many lavender based products, from soap and scent packs to lavender ice cream! Apart from the lavender, Farm Tomita has various flower fields, a forest covered field, a herb & perennial garden, a greenhouse, and a birch forest. Take your time and enjoy the splendid views as each garden offers colorful beauty. 

Getting to the farm by bus

The nearest bus stop is “Nakafurano” (Furano Bus). The Furano Bus (rapid lavender) does eight trips a day. For more information, click on this bus timetable. From Asahikawa station it takes 1 hour and 25 minutes and costs ¥780 one way. From Asahikawa airport it takes 48 minutes at ¥680 one way. The Chuo Bus from Sapporo runs ten times a day. From Sapporo to the Furano terminal it takes 2 hours and 30 minutes at ¥2,260 one way.  From the Furano bus station you can take a taxi which is a fifteen minute ride, or you can take the local train to the farm.

The local station is “Lavender Hata Station” which is a 7 minute walk from Farm Tomita, or its a 25 minute walk from “Nakafurano Station”.

Vegetable curry

Furano is home to delicious, fresh produce and it is here at Farm Restaurant Azemichi Yorimichi that you can find these delicious vegetables in some good home made cooking. The restaurant is located at a homestead in the middle of the Furano farming area and is accessible via car. The house is two stories and offers beautiful views over the farmlands (and the lavender fields in spring). All the dishes at Farm Restaurant Azemichi Yorimichi include local vegetables and they serve up curries, and spaghettis on their menu. The menu is only in Japanese but has pictures so you can order from those.

Outside seating area

To order at Farm Restaurant Azemichi Yorimichi, tell the waitperson what you want and then in turn they will give you a number. When your meal is ready they will call out the number and you will need to pick it up from the kitchen on the ground floor (so keep an ear out for your number in Japanese). The menu has some fantastic vegetable curries full of fresh flavor, plus a doria (Japanese casserole dish), and vegetable based spaghetti dishes! The meals come with a small, medium, or a large rice. They also have coffee, teas (including a blueberry tea), and juices. Sit inside or enjoy outside seating in their small garden.
