Kinotoya is a Sapporo based company that has a chain of coffee stores and sweets stores in the Sapporo and Chitose areas. Their stores can be found throughout the city near the main shopping hubs. The company was established in 1983 in Hokkaido. The company not only sells coffees and confectionary, but they are active with environmental initiatives. Their stores are predominantly confectionary stores that can be found in the big department stores in Sapporo, such as Daimaru and Marui-Imai. These stores are located on the basement floor in the food section. If you don’t have time to pick up some sweets, there is a Kinotoya located in the Shin Chitose Airport!

They also have a small store (Kinotoya Bake) in the underground walkway of Pole Town located between Susukino and Odori. Here they sell freshly baked cheese tarts and you can smell is definitely mouth watering as you walk past. For lunch and a coffee, their most popular cafe is right on Odori Park. Kinotoya Cafe has indoor as well as outdoor seating which is great for summer. The store is part of the Odori Bisse building. Here you can grab a nice coffee with a huge selection of cakes and for lunch they have salads, pizza, and soups.

Tonkatsu is one of the many Japanese dishes that can be found throughout the country. Tonkatsu is a Japanese dish which started in the 19th century. It is a dish that consists of breaded, deep fried pork cutlet, usually served with rice and a shredded cabbage. Tonkatsu Matsunoya is a chain of restaurants throughout Japan. There are eight stores throughout Sapporo, with two being in central Sapporo. These restaurants are good value, as they are quick, cheap, and delicious! And ordering is easy as well, for tourists as well as Japanese.

To order is on a self serve basis. There are some touch screens which have the menu on them for customers. The menu comes in Japanese, English, Chinese, and Korean. Simply choose your dish, take the ticket and wait for your number to come up. It’s that simple. The dishes are tasty, and the menu has some great sets which come with miso soup and rice. Perfect on a cold day! If you don’t like pork, there is the option of seafood (oyster, flatfish, shrimp) that is deep fried and equally good!

Soup curry is amazing! It is one of the great Hokkaido dishes. Picante is one of the well known soup curry restaurants in Sapporo. They have a couple of shops in Sapporo, and one other being down in Sendai, on the main island. They have some simply delicious dishes on the menu. Also, at Picante restaurants, you can buy their soup curry boxes. These soup curry packs allow you  take home and replicate the deliciousness which soup curry never fails to bring. So, what what is on the menu at Picante? They have a crispy chicken and vegetables which is fantastic and recommended, plus a grilled garlic soft lamb dish, a stewed Hokkaido beef dish, a premier Maitake mushroom dish, a vegetable dish, a dish from Okinawa using brown sugar, or the ‘Pika Special’ which is a soup curry with tempura soft boiled egg & mushroom tempura. When ordering your first choose your soup type, second step is to choose your meal, and third you choose your spice level, and lastly, choose any toppings you want. The hottest level uses the super spicy ‘habanero pepper’ (be careful not to mistake it for a carrot!). Enjoy

Street festivals in Japan are a fantastic look into Japanese culture and a great way to enjoy a day, taking in the sights, activities, and the local food. The Omotesando Street Festival is one of these festivals. This festival runs all day and can be found running the length of one of the main streets in the suburb of Maruyama, West Sapporo. It is on on the same day as the Sapporo Craft Beer Forest, which is not too far away. It’s a great idea to check out the Craft Beer Forest event and then finish the rest of the day at the Omotesando Street Festival!

The day is a real family affair. There is a lot to see and do. Lining both sides of the streets, there are plenty of food stalls. It is here you can grab some local food and enjoy it with a beer, wine or non alcoholic drinks. Local food includes oysters, BBQ chicken, edamame (steamed beans), and shellfish, just to name a few. For the kids, there are magic shows, and game stalls to win a price. The cafes, bars, and restaurants are also open along this street, so its all happening here! On a beautiful sunny day, you can’t beat the street festival.

In the southern part of Susukino you can find a noodle bar called Menya Itadaki. This place has a unique noodle menu that makes for an interesting dining experience. These Chinese noodles in a spicy soup have a real subtle taste that is full of flavor. The main ingredients are all using Hokkaido ingredients. Plus at Menya Itadaki, they use a Szechuan pepper to spice up the dishes which adds a nice flavor. Also noticeable from eating this pepper, is a strange tingling, numbing sensation on the tongue which adds an interesting element to the dish.

These soup dishes are full of tangy flavor and are delicious, plus the servings are a nice sizee. The noodles are dandan noodles and there are half a dozen bowls to choose from. There is the spicy dandan noodles, thick dandan noodles, thick tomato & cheese dandan noodles, a soupless spicy dandan noodles, and a selected Chinese soba and soy sauce bowl. For an extra ¥100 to ¥350 you can add extras to your bowl. Also, they have beer and highball drinks that can be ordered to have with your meal.

While in Sapporo and looking for some Japanese food for dinner and lunch, Umi E provides some good Japanese dishes to get into. The restaurant name ‘Umi E’ translates to ‘To the Sea’ and this restaurant/izakaya definitely has a lot of seafood to choose from. There are two locations in Sapporo. The first and larger restaurant can be found in Apia West which is on the basement walkway between Sapporo station and the Sapporo subway station. The other Umi E, is in the entertainment district of Susukino. Both of these restaurants are set up in traditional Japanese style which has a nice feel when dining.

Although the menu is Japanese, it has pictures showing each item so its not too difficult to order! The menu at Umi E is pretty vast so there is something for everyone. Their set meals are a good idea as you can sample a bit of everything so these are recommended. The seafood menu includes sushi, sashimi, crab, shellfish and fish which come in the meal though can be ordered separately. Apart from the seafood, they have salads and meat dishes, plus noodle dishes, tempura and soups. The drink menu has alcahol and soft drinks. So, for some nice traditional Japanese food, Umi E is an izakaya worth checking out.
