Shooting range

Ariake Base Survival is a survival game, using air guns. Arm yourself and go head to head to against the other team. It’s a lot of fun! The system is basically the same as paintball but with air guns. Airsoft guns shoot small 6mm biodegradable plastic pellets, and unlike paintball, the plastic pellets barely leave a mark on the skin. The airsoft guns can be set to single shot, semi automatic and automatic (depending on the field you’re on).  Airsoft guns are available for rent, with camouflage gear, mask, plus a canister of ammo which will last the whole day!

[the_ad id=”4264″]

Out!

On arrival you can rent your gear. After you will given a red or yellow arm band, which represents which team you are on. If its your first time, you will be taken to the 1st field and given a quick game to get used to the gun and the rules. Rules are simple; leave your mask on at all times on the field, once you have been hit (which does not really hurt), you have to raise your hands, take out your clip and leave the field to a side area with mask on (getting hit is based on the honor system). If you break these rules constantly you may be expelled from all games with no refund.

1st field

There are 3 fields in all, and games are rotated around these fields. Games consist of capture the flag, last man standing and which team has the most kills after 5 minute games. Games last from 5 to 10 minutes and the teams range from 20 to 30 on each side. What makes the Ariake base a lot of fun are the local members, who often are here weekly. They dress up in all the gear (whether it be in SWAT or tactical), armed with varieties of airsoft guns, from sniper rifles to hand guns, and they are very friendly and welcoming! It really adds to the experience.

Game on!

So, for a great day out with a bunch of friends Ariake Base is definitely a place to check out. You will need transport and someone who can speak Japanese is highly recommended! Grab some gear, shoot the other team, have a BBQ and let the fun unfold. During winter, the Ariake Base is closed but fear not! At Jozankei, there is an indoor playing area that is open all year round! For more information read on..

Shakotan Shimamui Coast

Lovely coastline

Shimamui coast is part of the Shakotan Cape which is on the western coast of Hokkaido. It is located next to Cape Shakotan and is famous for its coastline, and its crystal clear waters. There is a lookout at about 100m above sea level, offering stunning views from the cliffs down onto the water. The lookout is only a 5 minute walk from the car park so its easy to get to! There is a narrow tunnel that leads to the viewing point. There is also one more lookout which is slightly higher and offers similar views.

Shakotan Shimamui Coast

Beautiful clear water

To get down to the water there is a small path that winds its way down to the rocky shoreline. Be aware, this track can get muddy at times. The rocky shore line is surrounded by craggy peaks, that feel primordial. The contrast of these rocks with the water, also known as ‘Shakotan Blue’ is a real feature and a great photo opportunity. The Shimamui Coast was included in the “top 100 coastlines in Japan”. If you fancy a bit of snorkeling in these calm waters you will see thousands of sea urchin, islands and valleys of rock crowned in seaweed, a few fish and you will have stunning views to the bottom! The water is chilly (depending where you come from) so its best in the summer months.

Shakotan Shimamui Coast

Sunset over Shimamui coast

There may be an opportunity to see seals on the coasts during the winter but you need a pair of long boots or mountain-climbing boots to navigate the snow-covered path to the coasts. After taking in the views, there is a restaurant and souvenir shop named “Rinko” that serves primarily sea urchin in varying dishes. They also have ice cream cones which is perfect in the summer! There is also a separate restroom located next to the parking lot. To make a real day of it, you can head around to Cape Shakotan, Cape Kamui, and Cape Ogon which all have fantastic views and are all near each other!

Lake Shikotsuko Camping

Lots to do on the lake

There is plenty of space to camp along the shores though its best to get there early, especially in the peak season (mid August). Upon entering the site, there will be an administration building where you will need to pay to enter. If the building is closed you can still go in and pay the next day. There is parking for up to 150 cars.  Once in, there are carts to help you move your gear to the lake shore.

The campsite is along the shore of pebbles of the lake, so something comfortable to sleep on, is advised. Extra equipment is NOT available to rent, ONLY basic BBQ equipment such as grill and coal. All other equipment must be supplied by yourself. Other facilities include toilets that are well kept, a restaurant during the day, vending machines, and the rental shop.

Lake Shikotsuko Camping

Choose your swan!

The deep waters are crystal clear and stay at a cold temperature all year round, perfect for cooling off in the summer. The waters are also popular for fishing, canoeing and paddle boarding. There are boats and swan paddle boats available to rent. To rent a boat it cost ¥1000 per hour, and fits up to 2 people. To rent swan paddle boats for 3 people, it costs ¥1500 for 30 minutes, and for 4 people it’s ¥2000 for 30 minutes. The lake is 78 square km so there is a lot space to roam!
