Iyahiko Shrine is located in Nakajima park on the east side. It’s a small Shinto shrine and when you are in
Nakajima Park it’s another nice little spot to visit to get some nice photos, to pray, or to buy a souvenir or prayer amulet. Feel free to walk around the small grounds, or sit for a coffee and enjoy a piece of Japanese culture. There are special events at the shrine that take place throughout the year, especially around New Year. Summer and the Obon festival are also big on the calendar. Iyahiko Shrine is especially beautiful during the autumn and winter seasons.

Prayer rooms and prayer times are daily. For specific blessings, for things such as company prosperity, baby blessings, or for family health and safety then a priest is available. The cost ranges from ￥5000 to ￥15,000. Before coming to visit for a blessing, it is recommended to contact the shrine as there are occasions where the priest is absent at a visit. And as with all religious or spiritual places, the shrine is available for weddings or funerals. The amulets and trinkets available from the shop cover things from health, luck to money and prosperity.

The Moon and Sun Craft Beer Brewery is a microbrewery located in Sapporo. This bar offers up a fine selection of craft beers as well as delicious foods to go with them. There are 10 types of craft beer on tap plus craft beer from other breweries! You can order pints (450 ml) or half paints (250 ml). If you are interested in sampling the numerous beers on the menu they have a 3 beer and a 5 beer tasting set (recommended). On the menu, each beer has a circular graph with ratings of flavor, crispness, malt, fruitiness, color, strength etc, so you can sample the beer that catches your fancy. Each beer is served in a 150 ml glass. Of course, if beer isn’t your thing, then there are delicious wines (foreign and local), cocktails, soft drinks and coffee!

And of course, with good beer, comes good food! The Moon and Sun has a great food menu which compliments its tasty beverages. Cheeses, pâté, salami, fruits, seafood and breads are all available to compliment any choice of drink. The french fries are made from a variety of Hokkaido-grown potatoes served with a delicious sauce.For meals, then there are pastas, dumplings, spare ribs stewed in beer, and a delicious smoked chicken plate.
The Moon & Sun bar is a great micro-brewery, and a great place to sample some good beers, wines and have a meal. It is nicely laid out and the staff are super friendly, and helpful. The owner works along side his staff and is more than happy to have a chat. This is definitely a place worth checking if you have a night out in Sapporo.

The Hokkaido Museum of Literature first opened in 1995, and is the first of its kind in Hokkaido. It is located on the grounds of Nakajima Park and is home to some 260,000 works. The collection includes works by and about authors associated with Hokkaido, such as Takeo Arishima, Takuboku Ishikawa, Takiji Kobayashi, and Ayako Miura. There is a permanent exhibition as well as temporary exhibitions.

The permanent exhibition includes 1,300 items and provides an insight into the literature and authors throughout the history of Hokkaido. This permanent exhibition is currently only in Japanese. The collection is of works of Hokkaido literature dating back to the mid 19th century. These works includes novels, essays, poetry, tanka, haiku, senryu, children’s literature, works of criticism, and Ainu folklore.

Marumiya Restaurant is a large Izakaya (Japanese restaurant) that specializes in Hokkaido cuisine. Located conveniently, right near Sapporo station, its a great place to try out some Japanese cuisine. Open until early morning you can try out Hokkaido cooking, including crab, salmon roe, mackerel, tempura, sea urchin, sashimi, just to name a few. The drink menu serves up beer, soft drinks, wines, and a variety of Shochu and Japanese sake!

Plenty of seating
There is seating for up to 250 people, and there are private dining rooms for large groups! The menu is in a variety of languages plus pictures, so it’s easy to choose your dish. Marumiya uses local ingredients, so the menu changes with the seasons! There is an all you can drink, and an all you can eat menu, plus a set menu with a little bit of everything. Kinokuniya bookstore is a world wide Japanese bookstore chain operated by Kinokuniya Company Ltd. Founded in 1927, with its first store located in Shinjuku, Tokyo, the shop name means “Bookstore of Kii Province”. Kinokuniya has a huge range of books (fiction and non-fiction), comics, magazines, DVDs, learning materials, and also a Starbucks coffee shop on the 2nd floor. Kinokuniya also has a good selection of English novels, and teaching materials. Perfect for locals and tourists alike! Prices are generally around the ￥1000 to ￥2500 mark.

English section on 2nd floor
This large building is located conveniently across from the Daimaru shopping centre, and only a 5 minute walk from Sapporo station. The 1st floor has a large comic and manga section, magazines, Japanese novels, and there is a DVD shop selling Japanese and foreign movies here. The 2nd floor has learning materials, art books and calenders, and it is on this floor you will find all the foreign books. They have novels, and non-fiction English books by the latest authors. There are Japanese learning books (if you want to brush up on your Japanese ability), and English teaching materials here, plus a whole kids section.
Starbucks entrance
If you want to relax and have a quiet coffee while you peruse over any purchases from Kinokuniya, then the Starbucks on the 2nd floor is a perfect choice. It has wifi, plugs for your laptops, and a very nice shaded view with floor to ceiling windows. A great spot to sink into a comfy chair and read. So, if you’re looking for reading material then Kinokuniya is the place for you! Kinokuniya customer cards are also available here and can be used from other locations from other countries.

If you are in the mood for some Irish flavor, there are 2 Brian Brew pubs in Sapporo. One in the north of Sapporo, the other, in central Sapporo. Both are set up as a western style bar, with a nice selection of beers, and pub food!

Brian Brew, located in central Sapporo, is an Irish style pub that serves up good beer, and excellent bar food. Naturally, Guinness is on tap, as is Kilkenny ale. Carlsburg is also available, in pints or half pints. Irish whiskeys, cognacs are among the spirits and they also have some very good Italian, and Argentinian wines. Brian Brew’s food menu has some good hearty pub meals. Fish and chips, grilled steak, a selection of cheeses are all found here. It is also one of the few places in Sapporo that serves up meat pies, including sheperd’s pie, which is a welcome addition to the menu!

The staff are friendly, and able to communicate in English. Brian Brew has seating for around 36 people, the upstairs area is more suitable for larger groups. In summer there is outside seating. For those who enjoy the rugby, then this is the place to be. There are 2 large TV’s in the bottom section, that have all the latest rugby games on. Local games and international games can be seen here. Every Friday is lady’s day with cheap cocktails, and on the last Thursday of every month from 20:00 – 22:00 is the Irish Music Session. So, grab an ale, or a whiskey, and enjoy the hospitality of Brian Brew!
