The Hokkaido University Festival, also known as Hokudai-sai, is a three day event that is held at the start of June. It is a popular festival for the locals of Sapporo. The event allows the students to show the public their skills and cultural backgrounds. The event is actually compromised of ten festivals which are held down the main street of the campus in stalls, plus some of the surrounding buildings. One of the main attractions is the International Food Festival where you can sample foods from all over the world! These stalls are run by the international students attending the university.
Besides the International Food area, there are further stalls set up along the road. These stalls sell Japanese cuisine, and include games and events. There are student performances on stage, a rock festival, haunted house, and a cosplay event. Simply take a long stroll down the main road that runs through the campus and take in the sights and smells. The stalls run for a few hundred meters so there is a lot to see! The event starts during the first week of June and runs through the weekend. If you are in Sapporo around that time, make sure to put the Hokkaido University Festival into your schedule.

In Maruyama class, located on the 2nd floor of the shopping centre named Maruyama Class, are about half a dozen different restaurants to choose from. Sapporo Ramen Jikidenya is one of these restaurants. It is a ramen restaurant and has five different ramen bowls that are on their menu. The menu comes in English and each dish is pictured making it very convenient to order. The bowls of ramen come in the traditional flavors of miso, soy sauce, and salt ramen.

Sapporo Ramen Jikidenya also has a spicy ramen option with soy sauce or miso. The side dishes or toppings that go with your meal are cheap and can enhance the flavor. You can also upgrade your bowl to a larger size. Smaller dishes include a pork rice bowl with soft boiled egg, rice bowl with seasonal cod roe (fish eggs) and butter, spicy tofu, and boiled gyouza (dumplings). Juice and beer is available to drink plus the free water that comes with each table. Sapporo Ramen Jikidenya is a non smoking restaurant.

Hokkaido is famous for its nature and its produce. The Kurashi Store of Hokkaido is a chain of shops found not only in Hokkaido but also on the main island, selling popular items produced in Hokkaido. In the drinks department they have bottled beer, teas, and sake, plus a wide choice of coffees to try. At the Kurashi Store there are some tasting tables where you can sample the different blends. At the Sapporo store there is a take out corner where you can try Hokkaido-produced milk ice cream which is a popular treat. The Chitose branch has equally delicious gelato on offer. What’s better than one Soup Curry King stores? Two Soup Curry King stores! While in Sapporo, and you have a craving for a spicy meal, Soup Curry King offers some delicious dishes. The original store opened in 2007 in the Toyohira area (east Sapporo), and recently they have a new shop in central Sapporo. Look for their bright yellow sign. At either locations, hungry customers can choose from a dozen soup curry meals. The menu comes in English as well as Japanese, plus it is pictured, so its easy to order.

Soup King curry offers the vegetable curry, crispy chicken leg curry (yum), pork curry, and seafood curry. But each soup curry store has its own additional dish. Soup Curry King has a beef curry, a beef tendon curry, and if you’re interested, they have a natto minced beef curry. Natto is made from soybeans, and is a pungent favorite for Japanese nationals. Spice levels range from one to ten, then jack, queen, king, and finally the joker (adding of death sauce to the curry). Rice comes with all curries. For a little extra yen, toppings can be added. Soup Curry King as an extra twelve toppings from eggs & bacon to quail & even jellyfish (why not try?). Beers, soft drink & lassis are on the drink menu.

Peche Grand Sapporo serves as a coffee shop, a patisserie, a restaurant, a wine bar, or just as a spot to take a seat and relax. This restaurant & coffee shop can be found on the red brick plaza. The plaza is a beautiful tree lined road that leads to the Old Hokkaido Government Building. With outside seating during the warmer months, Peche Grand Sapporo is a great place to have a lunch or coffee. After taking in the sights of Lake Toya and are looking for a nice place to have a coffee, lunch, or dinner, or even a few drinks, then look no further than Toya Arts & Crafts. They are located across from Select 108 shopping and the Toya Tourist Hotel. Toya Art & Craft use local, seasonal ingredients that are combined to make some simply mouth watering dishes. They have a mix of different cultural dishes, including an Indian Spicy Pork Curry, Seafood Bouillabaisse, Roast Chicken, a Sashimi Seafood Bowl (from Friday to Sunday), or the Farmers Seasonal Salad Bowl. All ingredients are locally grown and fresh.

For appetizers there are Italian Olives, Fried Potato With Truffle Salt, or Fried Chicken. Inside there are artworks for customers to enjoy. As the name suggests, Toya Art & Crafts focuses on local craft blended with good local produce, wine & coffee. They have some delicious organic wines, and Hokkaido craft beers to choose from such as an Otaru Pilsner or the North Island Brown to name a few. Finally, with outside seating, you can sit back and enjoy a nice cup of tea, or coffee. The large tables inside are available for reservations making the restaurant a good place for parties as well as for small groups or couples.
