The falls are a 5 minute drive before arriving in the town of Hiroo. They are a 45 minute drive from Cape Erimo, and are on route 336 across from the ocean.
Funbe, Hiroo, Hiroo District, Hokkaido 089-2634

From Cape Erimo to the small town of Hiroo, there is a road that winds its way along the coast. Just fifteen minutes before the town of Hiroo, you can find the Funbe Falls. The road (route 336), that these falls are by, is known as the ‘Golden Road’. This road was originally started in 1798 and cut through the steep and craggy Hidaka mountains. It is called the Golden Road, as it cost a lot of money to make and through trade, the road spread gold. On one side of the road is the rough Pacific Ocean and on the other, is the cliffs of the Hidaka mountains that spreads deep into central Hokkaido.  These mountains spread for 140 km and it is from the base of these mountains that the Funbe Falls flow all year round.

The Golden Road, after rock fall stopped traffic, was renovated and completed in 1981 due to avalanches from the cliffs. The waterfall is not that big and can be easily missed. It is just before a turn in the road and although there is no parking, there is room to stop off on the road side. The falls are surrounded by small headstones and shrines. These shrines are decorated with flowers and make for a good photo. There are a couple of signs with information about the Golden Road and surrounding mountains, but these are only in Japanese. Open all year round, the falls freeze over in winter and also make for a good photo.

The walk to the waterfall is a nice stroll and it takes about 8 minutes to get there. On the way you can enjoy the flowing stream and the surrounding trees creating a picturesque scene. The path crosses over the river twice over small bridges. On the way to the falls you can also find a small Buddhist Shrine on the left. The path down to the falls

Located in the district of Ashibetsu you can a nice little park called Sandandaki Park. It is located along route 245. This route is often used on the way to Furano (a popular sightseeing town) or to Ashibetsu so the park serves well as a stop over or rest area for those driving along. What makes this park a popular spot are the Sandan Falls, which are only a five minute stroll from the large carpark. The path makes for a pleasant stroll as it is surrounded by forest area, with the river flowing down on the left hand side.

The falls during summer

The river in question is the Ashibetsu River. It flows for sixty kilometres, and runs through to the city of Ashibetsu itself. The Sandan Falls can be found around halfway along the Ashibetsu river not far from the park. The falls can range from a small trickle to a raging torrent during spring after the snowmelt. The river is especially beautiful during the spring with a couple of cherry blossoms and in autumn with the foliage along the river. Sandandaki Park has restrooms next to the parking lot, and there are benches to take a seat and enjoy the view.

White Silver Waterfall

On the west coast of Hokkaido, from Ishikari bay all the way up, to Rumoi and up further to the north of Hokkaido, there is a beautiful coastal drive that you can take. The coastal road on route 231, winds its way along, hugging the cliffs with the ocean lapping at its side. Along the way, there are plenty of places to stop and take a break. The Shiragane Falls, translated to the ‘White Silver Waterfall’ is one of these spots, where you can take a break, stretch the legs and take a look at the waterfall as it spills its way into the ocean below.

Relaxing spot

The falls are found at Cape Ofuyu and measure at thirty meters. In November 1977, Route 231 was opened, and to celebrate this achievement a monument was built. The monument can be found here at the Shiragane Waterfall. There is free parking available here, and the entrance can be found just after coming out of the Yutosu Tunnel (if coming from the Sapporo direction). The name meaning ‘White Silver’ is said to come from the silver splash that is reflected in the sunlight. It is a nice little spot, as the waterfall flows on one side, and the ocean can be found on the other.

Fishing spot

Takinoue Gorge (Kinsenkyo) is a hidden gem in the pleasant town of Takinoue and is formed from the Shokotsu River that flows from east to west. The gorge has a fantastic walking track that runs on both sides of the river offering great views down the gorge, and was voted as one of Hokkaido’s top hundred tourist spots for its breathtaking scenery. The path runs for 2.7km one way, starting from the rainbow bridge to the Keikoku Park Camping Ground. This river is a popular spot for fly fishing and was one of the first places in Japan to introduce the catch and release system. If you enjoy fishing this is a great spot to catch some rainbow trout. This river is beautiful in all seasons, especially in the autumn, as the leaves turn.

Rainbow Bridge & Dragon falls

Along the trail there are some nice spots for photos, such as the Rakuyo Falls. There is a small observation point that overlooks the falls, making it a good spot for photos. There are a number of small waterfalls and tributaries and bridges along the path. On the western end of the river, you will find the rainbow bridge. The rainbow bridge name doesn’t come from old Norse mythology, rather that there is a fountain on the downstream side of the bridge and when the fountain is operating, the suns rays form the rainbow. The two tiered bridge is at the junction of the Shokotsu River and the Sakuru River, where they meet and form the ‘Water Dragon Waterfall’. The rainbow bridge offers views over these rivers, as well as Takinoue Park. On the second level of the bridge there is a slide for the kids down to the first level.
