Gotoken is a small chain of restaurants located in Hakodate and Sapporo (for Sapporo location see below). Gotoken was founded by Sotaro Wakayama way back in 1879. These restaurants are certainly immersed in history. The first chef and co founder, Hidekichi Goshima fought in the battle of Hakodate with the shogunate army in 1897. The next generation, Tokujiro Wakayama, learned French cooking techniques at the Imperial Hotel. He introduced these extra techniques and ingredients to make Gotoken a successful restaurant that has survived over a hundred years.
With this in mind, Gotoken has a built up a broad menu of western style dishes. Besides the single dishes available, they have a dozen course plans which are delicious. There is a ‘Meiji Western Food and Curry’ set which incorporates dishes back from this era, a mix of British and Japanese flavors. Gotoken has a mix of French cuisine, Russian cuisine, and Italian just to name a few. Gotoken is also known for its curry sets. They have a Gotoken Curry restaurant at the Goryokaku Tower in Hakodate. Plus if you like something sweeter, there is a sweets shop as part of the restaurant chain.

Cafe Espuma can be found on the basement floor of the Sapporo Factory shopping center. The basement floor contains ‘the Atrium’ which is a huge space full of restaurants, inside garden, stage, and event space. It is here you can find Cafe Espuma. It has seating inside the restaurant as well as tables lining outside the restaurant in the Atrium. Due to its central location, it is an often crowded restaurant and sometimes difficult to get seating, especially for big groups. Once inside and seated you can enjoy tea, coffee, or the meals on their menu.
The staff cannot really communicate very well in English, and the menu is primarily in Japanese only but it does have pictures, so when ordering, it is simply a matter of pointing to what you want (for those who can’t speak Japanese). They have some teas to order, a selection of coffees, and a variety of ‘ice’ drinks. These ice drinks include soft drinks, yoghurt, milk, and juices. The food menu has omelette & rice dishes (known as Om Rice), pizzas, and a roast beef dish. The set menu includes a buffet. As part of your meal, you can grab your own salad and soup to have with your ordered meal. Enjoy.

Bistro Cobara Hetta is a large restaurant located above Sapporo station. It is part of the Stellar Place dining area and is one of over a dozen restaurants on this floor. Cobara Hetta is a casual dining French restaurant and serves up a variety of dishes either for lunch or dinner (the dinner menu starts from 17:00). They use frsh ingredients from around Hokkaido and take a lot of care in the meals they prepare. They also provide wine matching for some of their dishes to give that extra flavorsome experience. The menu is mainly in Japanese but each dish has a large picture so its easy to just simply point and say “this please”.
So, what do they have? There are a lot of meat dishes such as steaks and hamburgers, including an odd looking steak on steak burger (which is a hamburger with steaks instead of buns). There are pasta dishes, salads and fondue as well. These rich dishes are equalled by their sweets menu. The pancakes and parfaits are popular items on the menu, and don’t forget the roasted French toast with mixed berry & banana. Fo those in the mood for more of a large gathering, they have two kind of party plans to choose from, both include seven dishes. Reservations need to be made at least two days prior. The JR train line on the way to Otaru passes some great coastline. Along this JR line there are various stops before the final destination of Otaru. Two stations before the Otaru train station, you can find the Wing Bay Otaru department store. Opened in 1999, this huge department is about 1.5km long. It is one of the largest shopping complexes in Japan. The centre is 4 stories and has ample parking. In terms of shopping there are plenty of outlet shops, including mens, womens, and kids clothing stores. There is also a Nittori which is a huge furniture and home furnishing store.

Apart from all these shops, Wing Bay Otaru shops has a huge hotel overlooking the marina. There is a cinema, a swimming pool, a bowling alley and a sports club, plus a large play centre for the kids. To fuel the body for shopping and all these activities there are about thirty different restaurants ranging from Mos Burger to gourmet dining. There is also a supermarket to pick up some fresh food. It is here you can get some boxed lunches. Why not grab one and head out to the park overlooking the water or eat outside along the boardwalk.

RAD BROTHERS is one of the few bars that can claim it has seen it all over its 25 year history. Back in the day it had the infamy of being the ‘wild bar’ of Sapporo. It has definitely calmed down over the years, but it is one of the bars open at the wee hours of the morning if you are still staggering around at that time. The bar is situated on the southern end of Susukino (the entertainment district) and is on the corner of the main street offering large window views of the streets. It seats around 50 with more standing space and is good for large groups. It is even possible to rent the whole bar for a few hours, if that happens to tickle your fancy. The music ranges from rock to pop to anything really and the staff are more than happy to play a request. There are also two large TV screens that will play the main sporting events when they are on.

The menu is in English and the friendly staff have varying degrees of English ability which can come in handy after a few drinks. The menu has a standard set of drinks with Sapporo classic on tap, with a large array of cocktails, and with tequila shots that seem to pop up often on the counter. Prices are generally ¥550 for most drinks and ¥600 for imported beer, such as Corona and Heineken. On occasion RAD BROTHERS will have events which will involve a cheap ‘all you can drink’ plan. As this is a bar mainly for drinking, only basic bar food is the menu. Being mostly snack type foods consisting of fried food, the Rad Brothers small pizzas, cheese platters, and delicious buffalo wings. This bar is a smoking establishment and does accept credit cards which is a bonus for travelers as ATM’s in Japan aren’t as handy as one might think. Another great feature is that RAD BROTHERS has its own Wi-Fi hotspot, a somewhat uncommon feature in most bars in Japan!

The town of Shimukappu is a small town found in central Hokkaido. It is a quaint town surrounded by low mountains and farmlands. It is on one of the main expressways that run through Hokkaido making the town a convenient place to stop in for a rest or supplies. In the centre of the town travelers can find the Shimukappu Shopping Mall as well as the culture centre. They are both located right next to each other. The shopping mall is full of small shops, information on the area, and a couple of restaurants.

The shops at the shopping mall sell local souvenirs including arts and crafts such as wood carvings and local produce. Why, walking around, why not purchase some of the local wines, fresh vegetables from the outlying farms, or take back some canned or bottled foods to eat at home! If you are stopping in for a quick bite, there is a nice little hamburg & curry rice restaurant to check out. They also have a bakery, plus an ice cream shop for those hot sunny days!
