Sukiya is a huge chain of restaurants throughout Hokkaido. They are the equivalent to a fast food chain. But instead of hamburgers and french fries you can enjoy a beef bowl with salads and miso soup. The food here is good and cheap! the beef bowl known as ‘gyudon’ consists of thins strips of beef on a steamed plain rice in a bowl. In Japan, if you are looking for a cheap place to have a quick lunch or dinner, you probably won’t find anywhere cheaper than Sukiya. Due to the cheap price and food quality, there are around fifty restaurants throughout Hokkaido. Just look for the red and yellow Sukiya sign!
Ordering here is efficient and easy. There is a touch pad that has English, Korean, and Chinese so there is no problem if you don’t speak Japanese. Simply go through the menu on the touch screen and press on what you want to order. The dishes ordered will be out to you in about five minutes. There is table seating for small groups plus counter seating as well. Lunch sets are particularly good as you can get a salad and a miso soup with it. If you want a cheap and quick meal while on your travels, or on your lunch break, look no further than Sukiya.

This restaurant is located under the large Ferris wheel in central Sapporo in the building Norubesa. It is on the ground and has a nice ambient atmosphere on the inside plus a nice seating area on the outside in the non winter months. This place is especially good for large parties as there are some large tables near the windows. It is also a popular spot for dates and romantic dinners as each table is candle lit. There is smoking on the main floor which may make non smokers uncomfortable. The food here is beautifully presented and there are some unique dishes that you don’t usually find elsewhere. For example they have lamb cutlets, roast beef and seasonal salads. They also offer set meals ranging from ¥4000 – ¥6000.

The taste of the dishes, although good, is outdone by the presentation and doesn’t really compete. The servings are not big and you are looking at around ¥1000 a dish. The cocktail menu here is extensive and well presented. There is also a good wine selection and again, the wine servings are a little small. As mentioned, there are dinner and party plans that can be ordered if you don’t want to pay per dish. It’s best to reserve a table a few days prior so as to secure a spot. There is also an all you can drink option.

This is a popular ‘jingisukan’ restaurant in central Susukino, Sapporo. Jingisukan is mutton that is cooked on an open grill by the customers. You can find an assortment of meats, plus vegetables to cook as desired. What makes this place unique is included in the name of the restaurant, and that is the lemon sour drinks that are served. The lemon sour cocktails can be ordered through a ‘nomihodai’ (all you can drink) option. Nearly everyone goes for this option as it is unbelievably cheap at ¥600 per person for 90 minutes! Each table is set up with its own keg on tap that can be poured by the revelers.

There are different kinds of ‘all you can drink’ options. These include the cheapest lemon sour, or a strawberry sour option, plus other fruits to mix. Ordering food is not super simple as it should be. To order food you need to use the QR code that is given to you to access the menu. From there you can order from the link. This is a little laborious. After ordering the waitperson will bring out your food where you can cook it on the grill that they set up for you. This is a great place to because they have outside seating which isn’t often found in Susukino. There is also inside seating. If you do want to sit outside you will need to make a reservation well in advance so fingers crossed for good weather!

This is a nice little coffee shop on the outskirts of Sapporo on the west side. It is not a far walk from Maruyama subway station and is also easily accessed by car. The coffee shop is two stories plus a small gift store behind it. The food here is very good and you can find some hearty meals such as hamburger steaks, pastas and a selection of meats. This coffee shop is great spot for lunch. A lot of the seating here is catered for couples or for small groups of up to four.
There are quite a lot of nice coffees here to enjoy. The small windows here overlook the main road but there is a large forest area that overlooks the cafe offering some greenery. There is counter seating down the bottom as well. There are a few items on sale here including cups and some t-shirts to buy. Out the back, you can find more of these goods. If you have driven here, there is a small parking area which caters for about six cars. This is a comfortable cafe with good food and is one of many in the near area.

Salt Moderate is a dining bar in central Sapporo. Its main attraction is its oysters. If you are looking for seafood plus some western style meats and dishes, this is a good place to try. It can get busy on the weekends, so it’s better to reserve a seat or table. There kitchen here is open so you can see the busy cooks getting the tasty dishes ready. As we’ve said, the oysters here a good and fresh and you can order them individually or there are oyster platters available. These are served on beds of ice. There are different servings of oysters with different toppings, such as fish eggs, cheese, and a chili sauce. Fantastic!

There are many other great dishes here too! Steaks served on a wooden slab, hand made fries, avocado salads, plus a nice chicken dish. All this food is nicely presented by the relatively young staff here. To go with the food you can enjoy an all you can drink option. This goes for 90 minutes and includes beer. This place is good for small groups of up to four, or for couples to celebrate a birthday or on a date. This is a smoking establishment so be aware of you don’t like smoking. This definitely a place to visit again.

Genki Sushi is a huge chain of restaurants in Japan. The company was first established in 1968. The main purpose of the company was to bring sushi to the masses. And they have certainly achieved that goal. Genki Sushi has established over thirty sushi restaurants not only in Hokkaido but throughout the main island of Honshu. Genki Sushi stores have also popped up overseas! So, why is this chain of sushi restaurants so popular and become so successful? The answer lies in the cost and efficiency. You can a dozen plates of sushi and still keep the price around the ¥1000 mark. The sushi here is not as good as most sushi restaurants but it isn’t far off, so if you want a cheaper but still tasty sushi experience, Genki Sushi is a great option!

The sushi here is served in pairs and it is all the same price which is about ¥100 a plate. Ordering is done all by a touch screen so you don’t have to wait for a waitperson or the chef if he is busy. The touch screen has English, Chinese, and Korean translations. Simply click on the sushi you want and place your order. The sushi is delivered via automation along a track in the shape of a bullet train. If you do have any trouble you can always call for staff.
