The Sapporo Ekimae-dori Underground Pedestrian Space also known as Chikaho, opened on March 12, 2011. The underground walkway runs for 520 meters and is a huge space. This walkway has a few restaurants along its path, a couple of coffee shops, art & event spaces. There are two toilet facilities and numerous rest stops and places to sit down. The underground walkway is particularly useful and popular during the cold winter months. This in turn connects with other underground shopping areas, so you can easily access most of downtown Sapporo without walking through the winter snow and cold.

The walkway has many spaces that can be rented out for use, so throughout the year there is always something going on in the tunnel. To rent out a space, then you can contact them directly via their website. There are four spaces that are available to rent. The cheapest which is 24 square meters costs ¥7200 per weekday and ¥20,000 per weekend. The largest space is 300 square meters and that costs ¥150,000 per weekday, and ¥360,000 for the weekend. With the amount of people walking by, its a great way to exhibit or promote an event! The walkway connect to Pole Town which continues all the way Susukino subway station. In the hills of west Sapporo, there are some nice little cafes offering views over Sapporo. Nollys Botanical Cafe is one of these coffee shops. It is a nice comfortable cafe with nice views through its large windows. It is on the second floor above a flower and crafts store. Nollys also serves as a shop selling up art & crafts, garden goods, and flower products called Nollys/Araza. It is an especially nice cafe to visit in the spring and summer time with its outdoor seating. It also makes for the perfect stop in, especially if you have been to the Horomitoge Lavender Gardens which are around the other side of Asahiyama Park.

The menu is in English as well as Japanese, making it easy to order for those traveling. They have various coffees to choose (both ice and hot) which you can enjoy on their own or with one of the dishes from the food menu. They have half a dozen dishes which include a spicy baked curry, a home made quiche, and a pasta lunch. These lunches can come in a set, and for an extra ¥400 you can get drink plus a dessert. These delicious dishes are served with a soup or a salad. Nollys is a great place to have a coffee and to do a little shopping for some nicely designed handmade crafts.

NAC Niseko Adventure is a hugely popular outdoor adventure company. Their main building can be found in the centre of Niseko and it is here where you can find JoJo’s. JoJo’s is a restaurant and coffee shop that is a great place to sit down and enjoy a lunch, or dinner, with friends and family after a days activities whether it be summer or winter. On the menu they have some truly juicy hamburgers. They have an original, bacon & cheese, or a salsa burger to wrap your teeth around! They also have a taco & rice to try.

Of course, if you just want to relax, then take a seat and enjoy the coffees and teas. During the warmer months they have outside seating where you can take in the surrounding views. If you are in a group, JoJo’s has a course meals that are perfect for parties and gatherings (reservations required). These group plans include a seasonal course menu, a buffet style, an outdoor BBQ (from June to September 15), or an all you can drink plan that has beers and cocktails. If you have kids, they can enjoy the jungle gym, plus there is rock climbing and bouldering to try!

Furano Marche is a small plaza that is home to twenty different shops, eateries and restaurants. Furano Marche serves as a popular tourist spot where you can pick up some great souvenirs, buy some local produce to take home to the kitchen, or take a rest and enjoy a quick feed on some local popular fare. It is conveniently located in the centre of the small town of Furano, and is a stones throw away from Furano station, and Furano shrine. If you are driving in, there is ample parking to be found. Furano marche makes a great spot to include on your travels in the area.

Furano Marche is separated into two different sections, Furano Marche 1 and Furano March 2. They are located on two parallel blocks separated by a small road. Furano Marche 1 has an open plaza in the centre, whereas Marche 2 is a larger building complex. Furano Marche 1 includes a mouth watering burger shop, a cafe, a fresh bread store, a takoyaki (fried octopus snack) shop, a fruit juice counter, a local produce store and souvenir store. The larger building of Marche 2 has a flower store, local souvenir store, a rice ball eatery to take out, a local restaurant, a grocery store, a ramen restaurant, and an ice-sundae eatery.

Lake Toya is a beautiful lake which is a two hour drive south of Sapporo. This scenic area has plenty of camp grounds and hotels. On the northern side of the lake, you can find a great coffee shop which is perfect for a lunch or early dinner. The cafe is across from the Tourist Information Centre, and is also a small walk from the Ko Park Camping Ground making it a popular spot for campers as well as those stopping in for a bite, or a nice cup of coffee. During the warmer season, Cafe Lake Toya has outside seating so you can enjoy scenery.

The lunch menu, which runs until three thirty in the afternoon, has a nice selection of delicious dishes. On the menu, you can find a beef on rice dish, a tandoori chicken, a beans keema curry, or a vegetarian galette with local vegetables, to name a few. You can enjoy these dishes in homely surroundings and for and extra ¥200 you can get the drink set menu. If you are looking for something small to go with your tea or coffee, Cafe Lake Toya makes some delicious pastries that you can buy at the counter. This cafe is a great spot for lunch with friendly staff!

The suburb of Maruyama is a nice area with lots of coffee shops and restaurants. Cafe Bidama is a large coffee shop located in the heart of Maruyama, right by Maruyama class shopping centre, making it easy to access. It has inside as well as outside seating making it a pleasant place to have a coffee, lunch, or a few drinks. The cafe/restaurant has two floors, with private rooms located on the second floor. Cafe Bidana has select coffee, teas, and they even have beer on the menu.

The food menu has quite a lot to choose from that especially suits for a brunch. There is french toast with fruit, eggs benedict, a butter chicken curry with toast, and a cheddar cheese & maple syrup french toast. Cafe Bidama have their own style of okonomiyaki (a popular pan-fried dish that consists of batter and cabbage). They have a shrimp & avocado type, and a prune type okonomiyaki. There are lunch sets as well including a hamburg set which comes with miso, salads, and rice. At cafe Bidama, you can pick up a magazine there, settle in to a nice chair and enjoy a lunch & coffee.
