Nishi Tonden is a soup curry restaurant that can be found in the south western area of Sapporo. It has some great (and also some of the spiciest) soup curry dishes on offer, that are unique only to Nishi Tonden. They also offer four different soup curry flavors which is a real bonus! This soup curry restaurant is also unique, in that it has a small range of manga comics to peruse over which makes it a popular spot for the locals. They have table seating for small groups, plus counter seating at which to feast on some good soup curries.

The Nishi Tonden Dori Soup Curry menu includes chicken, a delicious vegetable curry, the hamburg curry (which is highly recommended), plus a pork curry, and interestingly, a ramen soup curry. There are around a dozen dishes to choose from. The spice level ranges from one to eight. Be warned, though, eight is one of the hottest curries in town. Their soup curry flavors include coconut and a creamy prawn flavor. Delicious! There are added extras that are available to make your meal even more mouth watering. And of course, the drink menu includes lassis, soft drinks and in the beer department, Sapporo Classic, and Guinness!

If you are looking for some good live music, Cross Roads is a great bar to check out. The bar is named after the cult classic movie ‘Crossroads’. Whereas the film has some epic guitar playing, so does this bar. Founded in 1998, you can enjoy music from the house band that is second to none. The musicians here are truly masters of their instruments, as they play cover songs from the 70’s rock era, from bands such as Eric Clapton, CCR, Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Journey, ZZ Top, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Chicago, Jeff Beck, Led Zeppelin, Bon Jovi and more!

There is plenty of table seating, plus bar seating, where you can sit, drink, and enjoy the music, whether alone, on a date, or with a group. There is a stage charge system to see the band. It is ¥1000 for the first stage, and an extra ¥500 for following performances, which start at 20:00 and continue hourly. There is beer, wine, and spirits on the menu. Crossroads is also available to book for parties, and wedding parties. On Sundays, the space is available for musicians to hire for 30 minute shows, where equipment is provided.

Soseigawa Park can be found in central Sapporo, and runs from north to south, for 820 meters. It’s a pleasant place to take a stroll along the narrow river that runs through the centre of the park. The Sosei bridge crosses through the centre of the park, and is said that the history of Sapporo started at the very foot of this bridge. A statue of Otomo Kametaro, who first excavated the canal in 1869, can be found here. The park was redesigned and completed in 2011 with amenities, grass area, sculptures, and an underpass was put in.

Soseigawa Park runs by the Nijo Ichiba Fish Markets and also the TV Tower at the eastern end of Odori park. There are around thirty different lilac trees planted throughout the park, twenty kinds of ‘Day Lilies’, and thirty seven German lilies. Along the walkways, you can find sculptures by three Japanese artists, Yasushi Yasuda, Yasuzo Nishino, and Eiki Danzuka. Throughout the year, Soseigawa Park is home to numerous festivals and events especially during the spring and summer. These events are a great spot to unwind and take in the beauty of Soseigawa park.

“Yamarashi KuroTora” which translates, impressively, into “Mountain Storm Black Tiger” is a nice little ramen restaurant that can be found in central Sapporo. It can be found one block south from the shopping arcade known asTanuki Koji. It is one of three of the ‘Yamarashi ramen’ chains, the other two also being in Sapporo (see below). The restaurant only has seating for eight. Once inside you can find a vending machine on your right with which to order your ramen. Unfortunately, this is only in Japanese. the menu is pictured but for information on the kanji, read below.

There are six different flavors, though each has the same basic ingredients of pork, spring onion, noodles, and nori (dried seaweed). Each flavor has a slightly different nuance. 白 is the basic ramen which is salt flavored, or you can try 味噌白 which is the same with but seasoned with miso. 黒 is ramen with soy sauce added, and 海 is a seafood flavored ramen. For something a little spicier, you may prefer the red ramen 赤 or 味噌赤 which is the miso version. Whatever your pick, the ramen here is delicious! The miso and soy sauce ramen being the most popular. If you are looking for some billiards, darts, or even to have an indoor golf game, then the ‘Golf & Darts Bar’ is for you. It can be easily found on the 6th floor of the Norbesa Building in Sapporo. Simply look for the giant ferris wheel on top of the building. The ‘Golf & Darts Bar’ is next to the ‘Dinos Bowling’. The bar has three billiard tables, five electronic dart machines, and two large golf simulators. It’s a great spot for parties and groups, there is a bar there and a small food menu. Party plans are available for groups, plus there is an ‘all you can drink’ option.

There are two kinds of party plans, the first being a ‘darts & all you can drink plan’ for ninety minutes which will cost ¥2600 per person. The other being the ‘billiards & all you can drink plan’ for ninety minutes. This course will cost each person ¥2700. It is wise to book ahead, especially for the billiard tables as there are only three of these. The drink menu includes beer on tap, Coronas, and Carlsberg. There is a whiskey menu that accompanies this. There is also a cocktail menu and for shots, Jägermeister!

Plantation is a local Sapporo coffee shop that is part of the Morihico company. It is located in Kikusui, east of central Sapporo and not too far from Toyohira River. The coffee shop is located in a large ivy covered warehouse, and has a brilliantly designed interior with coffee machinery, couches and tables. The dining area is located on the second floor, with a small shop on the ground floor. Here you can purchase coffee goods to take home and enjoy. The friendly staff are fantastic and speak Japanese and English.

Plantation has a good selection of coffees with their very own freshly produced ‘Plantation Blend’ and ‘Specialty Coffee’. There are half a dozen coffees from which to choose from. The food menu varies depending on the day, but you can find pastas, a Japanese curry & rice, a Thai curry, or a ‘Croque Monsieur’ toasted cheese sandwich. And of course, every coffee shop must have a dessert menu. Plantation has cheese cakes, parfaits, cakes, affogato (coffee poured over vanilla ice cream), and seasonal cakes such as pistachio or tarte à l’orange.
