Bird Watching is a cozy little bar that also excels in yakitori (skewered meat) and French cuisine. With three floors and large windows, you can enjoy views of the downtown area while sipping on a variety of spirits and wines and partaking in some unique cuisine. The bar is a perfect spot for small groups or couples. The drink menu has some great sake, whiskeys, wines (red and white), cocktails and ‘Yuzu sake’. Yuzu is a Japanese citrus fruit. It’s tart and bitter, citrus-like, tangy and fresh, making it a refreshing and delicious sake which is a must try!

The food at Bird Watching is also a delicious mix of French and Japanese styles. You can order individual meat skewers of various kinds, or a selection of delicious French plates such as carpaccio, quiche, or potage. Alternatively, if you want to try a bit of everything than there are various set menus you can try. The three sets range from ¥1900 to ¥3900. These include small French dishes, yakitori, salads, and desserts. With three floors there are lots of cozy small tables to sit and enjoy the Bird Watching bar.

Irish Pub O’Neill’s is a great pub located in Paseo West Dining at Sapporo Station. If you like some good foreign beer, or some good hearty food, then this is a great spot to have some lunch, or dinner. O’Neill’s is good for sharing a drink with friends, taking in some sports on the screens, or having a nice quiet beer. The lunch menus of steak or sausages come as a set with a salad, bread and a soup. The dinner menu has some delicious options of lamb, chicken steaks, Irish stew, fish and chips, and of course, sheperd’s pie!

Apart from the extensive food menu, O’Neill’s has a great selection of world beers. As you can expect from an Irish bar, they have Guinness, and Kilkenny. Local beers include, Sapporo Classic, Yebisu Creamy Top, and Edelpis. If you’re looking for something with a bit more bite, then there are some whiskeys (Irish, scotch & bourbon) to sample. For groups, there are all you can drink plans that come with food. The ‘all you can drink’ plan goes for 120 minutes. If you are looking for an Irish style bar, then O’Neill’s is a good spot to check out.

Beer Bar Basil Basil is a popular bar to grab some good food, and some good beer, and have a night out with some friends. It is located on the southern end of Susukino, the night life district of Sapporo. It is not on the main street but one block across from the main drag. Opening in 1999, Basil Basil focuses its menu on a good selection of Japanese beers plus some European ales. To go with the beer, there is a good selection of bar food that will please any customer!

The beer menu has Sapporo Classic, a nice Yebisu on tap, a Yebisu black stout, Edelpils (a German Pilsener style beer) plus some foreign beers. These include Hoegaarden, a bass pale ale, and a Guinness. The food menu has plenty of dishes to match the beer, such as pizza, spicy chicken, sausages, oysters and shrimp, tortillas and beans, pastrami and sauerkraut. For those looking for group specials, Beer Bar Basil Basil has party plans. Six dishes plus an all you can drink for an hour and a half plan, will put you back at ¥3800 per person. An all you can drink plan, for an hour and a half will cost ¥2800 per person. You can reserve tables for 10-14 people, 20-26 people, or you can hire the whole 40 seats including the counter area!

Afro Play is a spacious bar located near the southern end of Susukino. It has a friendly atmosphere, mainly thanks to the fantastic staff who work there, who are always happy to chat with the customers. This bar is one of the few bars in Susukino to have a pool table which is definitely a plus! It also has a a darts bar as well if you feel the need, which is ¥100 a game for each player. Or you can just sit at one of the many tables located around the bar. Afro Play is good for small groups from four to ten people with plenty of seating. During the warmer months they have outside seating which is great!

Afro Play has a small seating charge of a couple of hundred yen. There is an ‘all you can drink’ option for two hours for ¥2000. Otherwise drinks are ordered separately and are around the ¥600 mark. Spirits and beer and non-alcoholic drinks are all available. Afro Play also serves up some delicious bar food. Afro Play, due to its size can be hired out for parties as well which costs from ¥2400 to ¥3500 per person, depending on the plan. Bookings can be made at the Japanese site at Gurunavi . Afro Play is a great bar for a night out with friends. It is also located across from Rad Brothers Bar and it’s right by the club, Booty.

Located in downtown Susukino, Phoenix Public Theater is the closest thing you will find to a burlesque bar in Sapporo. In its lush interior you can enjoy numerous performances from the pole dancers and cabaret singers while having a drink at the bar or on one of the many lounges. There are two systems available, you can either pay as you drink or customers can order the ‘all you can drink’ plan. All you can drink plans start from ¥2370 per hour and can be extended every 30 minutes. This is a hostess bar, so hostesses will come and join you at your table, where you can buy them a drink. Touching is not allowed. Cash or credit card is available to pay.

Drinks on the menu include beers, spirits, scotch & brandies, wine, and if you’re feeling like spending big, champagne. For non Japanese speakers, the menu and system is explained in a variety of languages so it’s easy to understand. Some of the hostesses have different language abilities for tourists. Although this is a hostess bar, it is also popular for couples as well to watch the shows. Performers will walk around after, where the patrons can give them tips. There is a small food menu available as well. For a night out, and with some cash to spend and looking for something different, Phoenix Public Theater is definitely an option!

Vinnie’s bar is a small live music venue that often has live bands playing very week. The stage is reasonably large and there is enough seating for about 30 people plus standing room. The bar area sells beer on tap (Suntory), plus a variety of cocktails, non-alcohol beers, and non-alcohol cocktails. All drinks are ¥500 each. There is also a food menu that has some pastas and finger food. The live house has a good sound system and the music played is well mixed by the owner. For local bands, this is not a bad place to have a gig!

Vinnie’s bar is slightly out of downtown Sapporo (it’s about a ¥1000 taxi fare), but this bar is part of a music studio, and it is also located underneath a bowling alley, so there is there is quite a lot do in this building. The bowling alley is called ‘Sapporo Olympia Bowl’ and is a good spot to get your bowling shoes on. There is plenty of parking for those driving. The music studio operates in tandem with the bar, and many bands that practice at the studio will often have a live show.
