Great views

At an altitude of 532 meters, Mt. Tengu is a symbolic mountain of Otaru. It offers beautiful views overlooking Otaru, and the Sea of Japan. The night view from the observatory is particular stunning. Mt. Tengu has a lot to see and do besides the fantastic view. They have a restaurant and coffee shop with panoramic views, a hiking area, a downhill sled ride, a shrine, a museum, and a squirrel enclosure. To get to the top, there is a ropeway that runs every twelve minutes from 9am until 8:48pm.

“Tengu” of Japanese folklore

Once alighting the cablecar, you will first enter the gift shop and restaurant, where you can sit and have lunch, dinner or coffee. If you need lockers, there are a few here for ¥500 for the day, and which are cheaper than the lockers at the bottom of the mountain. It is here too, you can see the Otaru Winter Museum, and the Tengu Hall which has fantastic Tengu masks on display. Outside, there is “Nausea’s Tengu”, a giant Tengu sculpture, which if you touch the nose, your wishes will come true. Behind this is a squirrel enclosure (open only during the summer), and a shrine, known as “Tengusan Shrine”. The shrine in the evening is lit by lanterns and is especially beautiful during this time.

One of the observation points

Circling around the top of the mountain is a small hiking path. It takes about 25 minutes to walk around. It is a pleasant walk and while walking around there are a couple of clear vantage points that offer beautiful views over the surrounding area. Finally, for kids and adults there is a downhill bobsled track that runs for 400 meters. The track costs ¥500 for adults and ¥300 for children. The track is closed during bad weather. All this during the summer, and during the winter there is skiing and snowboarding as well! A great place for family and friends.

It has some great (and also some of the spiciest) soup curry dishes on offer, that are unique only to Nishi Tonden. They also offer four different soup curry flavors which is a real bonus! This soup curry restaurant is also unique, in that it has a small range of manga comics to peruse over which makes it a popular spot for the locals. They have table seating for small groups, plus counter seating at which to feast on some good soup curries.

The hamburg soup curry

The Nishi Tonden Dori Soup Curry menu includes chicken, a delicious vegetable curry, the hamburg curry (which is highly recommended), plus a pork curry, and interestingly, a ramen soup curry. There are around a dozen dishes to choose from. The spice level ranges from one to eight. Be warned, though, eight is one of the hottest curries in town. Their soup curry flavors include coconut and a creamy prawn flavor. Delicious! There are added extras that are available to make your meal even more mouth watering. “Yamarashi KuroTora” which translates, impressively, into “Mountain Storm Black Tiger” is a nice little ramen restaurant that can be found in central Sapporo. It can be found one block south from the shopping arcade known asTanuki Koji. It is one of three of the ‘Yamarashi ramen’ chains, the other two also being in Sapporo (see below). The restaurant only has seating for eight. Once inside you can find a vending machine on your right with which to order your ramen. Unfortunately, this is only in Japanese. the menu is pictured but for information on the kanji, read below.

Choose from one of six flavors

There are six different flavors, though each has the same basic ingredients of pork, spring onion, noodles, and nori (dried seaweed). Each flavor has a slightly different nuance. 白 is the basic ramen which is salt flavored, or you can try 味噌白 which is the same with but seasoned with miso. 黒 is ramen with soy sauce added, and 海 is a seafood flavored ramen. For something a little spicier, you may prefer the red ramen 赤 or 味噌赤 which is the miso version. Whatever your pick, the ramen here is delicious! The miso and soy sauce ramen being the most popular. For a little extra yen, you may add toppings to your dish. For two other locations, read below.

Eggs benedict with ham & salmon

The menu has a few pasta dishes with some great sauces, risottos, and some oven dishes such as an oven baked beef stroganoff or the stewed mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce with hamburger. La Maison Ensoleille Table is also one of the few places that serves up an eggs benedict with salmon (which technically makes it an ‘egg royale’). The desserts here are fantastic such as the french toast caramel apple pie. You can enjoy these desserts with a selection of herbal teas, coffees and other beverages.
