Perch is a great homely coffee shop in Sapporo. It has been set up in one of the houses in area and serves not only as a cafe, but as a bar and also as an arts and crafts store! On the first floor there are comfortable chairs plus tables for larger groups, and a kitchen area where the friendly owner cooks up some nice lunches and homemade desserts. For lunch or dinners they have pastas, smoked sausages, and a delicious keema curry. There is also a selection of spirits and wines if you are looking for something stronger than coffee.
The desserts here are fantastic. The caramel pudding is homemade, as well as the cheesecake. Both are equally delicious and are the perfect accompaniment to a nice cup of coffee or tea. As well as the dining area, there is a tatami room as well that has some nice handmade crafts for sale. A nice little Japanese touch to the place. On the 2nd floor you can find some more items, handmade dolls and cups and saucers, plus Japanese memorabilia to purchase. Perch is a nice cafe/bar and is very affordable making it a good place for a quiet lunch or dinner or it even serves as a party venue for large groups if need be!

This department store sits on the main crossroads that pass through Susukino. Cocono faces the famous ‘Nikka Sign’ and the MacDonalds across the road. It is an impressive building and was designed as new “playground where people can enjoy themselves through a wide variety of experiences, from exciting to restful”. So, what can be found here? There is a supermarket with direct access to Susukino subway station. On the next several floors there are shops, restaurants, bars, a casino area, plus a movie theatre and a hotel. Helio Hostel is a good option for solo travelers on a budget. The bunk beds are quite large and provide everything you need for this type of accommodation. There are shower facilities plus towels supplied. There is a thin curtain to pull across to give you some privacy. The staff are very friendly and will assist you, though they are not available after 23:00. They have male, mixed, and female dormitories. This hostel is very convenient as it is right in the middle of town so it’s easy to access all the sightseeing, shopping, and the nightlife. There is an office space on the second floor with a coffee shop on the ground floor.
The coffee shop is fantastic and perfect for those who need a quiet spot do some work, study, or relax. There is plenty of seating with small tables and comfortable chairs or counter seating. Each has a power point which is not common in Japan so you can charge whatever device you are using. Equally convenient is the wi-fi here. There are tonnes of books and magazines in the lounge area lining the walls which are free to read at your leisure. The coffee here is ok, the Hokkaido latte is the best coffee they have here and is very good. They do not sell food here unfortunately. Overall, this is a clean and modern hostel in central Sapporo with a great cafe on the ground floor.

Solitude is very cozy jazz bar in Sapporo. It is as you would expect a dark and atmospheric bar with some very nice jazz tunes to chill to. Access is via a narrow flight of steps down. The bartender is very welcoming and, being a jazz drummer himself, a very cool character. He knows a lot about jazz! He also knows plenty about sake. This is the perfect spot to have a quiet drink and relax to some tunes. The bar is not far from Tanuki Koji and there is a small sit down charge but it’s worth it. The drinks are not overly expensive. There is only counter seating but it’s a great chance to talk to the owner and fellow jazz enthusiasts.

Suntory is synonymous with Japanese whiskey. Suntory Whiskey Avanti is a popular spot to try one of the many whiskeys that Suntory offers. There are two Avanti bars in Sapporo. One is in the popular Tanuki Koji Shopping Arcade, the other can be found along the main street running through Sapporo. Both these bars are similar in size with the same menus. There is a sit down charge in these bars unfortunately, and they are smoking establishments. The prices here vary from about ¥1000 to ¥3000 depending on your age of whiskey.

These bars also serve a variety of other cocktails so even if you don’t like whiskey, you can still enjoy a good drink. The bar tenders here are mainly female staff and they are very experienced at making the best drinks for you. The best thing about these bars is the openness to the street and public. It’s a good place to people watch while enjoying a drink. For those traveling, a good spot to see the daily life. These bars are smoking establishments. There are some food items on the menu such as pizzas, and ham dishes and other finger food.

This restaurant is located under the large Ferris wheel in central Sapporo in the building Norubesa. It is on the ground and has a nice ambient atmosphere on the inside plus a nice seating area on the outside in the non winter months. This place is especially good for large parties as there are some large tables near the windows. It is also a popular spot for dates and romantic dinners as each table is candle lit. There is smoking on the main floor which may make non smokers uncomfortable. The food here is beautifully presented and there are some unique dishes that you don’t usually find elsewhere. For example they have lamb cutlets, roast beef and seasonal salads. They also offer set meals ranging from ¥4000 – ¥6000.
[the_ad id=”4264″]
The taste of the dishes, although good, is outdone by the presentation and doesn’t really compete. The servings are not big and you are looking at around ¥1000 a dish. The cocktail menu here is extensive and well presented. There is also a good wine selection and again, the wine servings are a little small. As mentioned, there are dinner and party plans that can be ordered if you don’t want to pay per dish. It’s best to reserve a table a few days prior so as to secure a spot. There is also an all you can drink option.
