Lake Toya is a popular spot for locals and overseas travelers alike. The lake is a caldera lake and has a stratovolcano, Mt Usu, near the southern edge of the lake. This volcanic activity feeds the many onsens (hot springs) that make up the Toya onsen village which also lies on the southern side of the lake. There are a dozen onsen hotels here and every night a firework show is held from 8:45pm. The fireworks are set off from a boat which moves across the lake so everyone can get a close look. To view the fireworks you can stand along the shore line. And for those staying at one of the hotels, you can get great views from your hotel room. The best part is, it is all free! If you are feeling a little more adventurous, there is a ferry that heads out 8:30pm where you can view the fireworks from the water. The fireworks last for 20 minutes and if the weather is stormy they are cancelled.

The staff are very friendly and can speak English as well which is a bonus. They have about half a dozen different style burgers on their menu. The burger set comes with some crispy fried potato wedges and a drink. They also serve coffee at Hydune so this is also a good option to grab one and go and sit down by the lake. This building also has toilet facilities and showers. Outside of the building, you can find barbecue facilities on the large property here. Here you are free to use these to cook up a great summer barbecue for family or friends.

Sobetsu park is a beautiful hilltop park that commands some of the best of views of Lake Toya. Not only can you see the lake in its glory, but there are views of the volcano, Mount Usu. And in good weather, you can see Mount Yotei and the Niseko mountain range in the distance. Sobetsu Park is most famous for its views during the spring. During mid May, the three hundred plum blossoms are in full bloom making the park a particularly popular spot for photographers from all over. You can get some great photos of the blossoms with the lake in the background!

The park is huge and runs up the whole mountain and is adorned with a couple of sculptures. There is a narrow road that leads to the top where you can find parking for about twenty cars. Due to the winding road, it is inaccessible by bus. At the top, there are a few benches and tables and makes for a good picnic spot. Sightseers can also find a small shrine at the top here, which is surrounded, interestingly, by cut out steel swords and knives that have been placed on the fence. In the centre of the shrine, there is a warrior like statue. Sobetsu Park is a great place to take in the views!

The volcanic science museum can be found at the Toyako Visitor Center. It is an interesting small museum that focuses on the eruptions at Lake Toya that occurred in 1977, and in 2000. Through exhibitions, and experience devices you can get a real feel for the impact of these volcanic eruptions, and introduces the history of Mount Usu.
