Cocono Susukino was built on the remnants of the old Lafilier building with construction being completed in December 2023. This department store sits on the main crossroads that pass through Susukino. Cocono faces the famous ‘Nikka Sign’ and the MacDonalds across the road. It is an impressive building and was designed as new “playground where people can enjoy themselves through a wide variety of experiences, from exciting to restful”. So, what can be found here? There is a supermarket with direct access to Susukino subway station. On the next several floors there are shops, restaurants, bars, a casino area, plus a movie theatre and a hotel. Cocono is a step up from older designs and the space is used well, with an outside viewing area, plus it has seating areas throughout and stylish concept bars and restaurants.

Location | This izakaya is located in Susukino, Sapporo. It is along the main road passing across Susukino, route 36. It is located on the basement floor with easy access from street level. Just a 2 minute walk west from Susukino subway station. 〒064-0804 Hokkaido, Sapporo, Chuo Ward, Minami 4 Jonishi, 4 Chome, Suzuran Building B1F |
This restaurant is located under the large Ferris wheel in central Sapporo in the building Norubesa. It is on the ground and has a nice ambient atmosphere on the inside plus a nice seating area on the outside in the non winter months. This place is especially good for large parties as there are some large tables near the windows. It is also a popular spot for dates and romantic dinners as each table is candle lit. There is smoking on the main floor which may make non smokers uncomfortable. The food here is beautifully presented and there are some unique dishes that you don’t usually find elsewhere. For example they have lamb cutlets, roast beef and seasonal salads. They also offer set meals ranging from ¥4000 – ¥6000.
[the_ad id=”4264″]
The taste of the dishes, although good, is outdone by the presentation and doesn’t really compete. The servings are not big and you are looking at around ¥1000 a dish. The cocktail menu here is extensive and well presented. There is also a good wine selection and again, the wine servings are a little small. As mentioned, there are dinner and party plans that can be ordered if you don’t want to pay per dish. It’s best to reserve a table a few days prior so as to secure a spot. There is also an all you can drink option.

Bar España is a very popular bar located in the centre of Susukino. It is also part of a small chain run by a friendly local businessman. The other bar being the equally popular Bar España Carne. The bar is on the main street that runs through the nightlife district. It is usually full and bustling with those on a night out on the town. They have some great Spanish wines here plus cocktails and beer on tap. There is an ‘all you can drink’ option if need be. The bar is also popular because of the Spanish cuisine served up here. For those who enjoy a good paella, the paella here won an award back in 2018.
The food here is quite good. Other dishes of note include raw oysters from the Sakai family. These oysters from Akkeshi are popular winter speciality at Espana. Perfect to go with both wine and beer. More Spanish dishes include Iberian grilled pork, a classic dish ahijo (shrimp and garlic boiled in olive oil), grilled mushrooms with prosciutto ham, and a Spanish omelette. The layout is nice but small. For those in groups of four or more it is a good idea to book in advance. For couples it makes for a great date spot. Bar Espana is a must try especially in the warmer months with their outside seating. Disfrutar!

Sapporo, and its nightlife district of Susukino is full of bars, clubs and restaurants either on the main road or tucked away down small alleyways or streets. Barsamico is one of these bars that can be found in a small alleyway. It is a very popular bar and for good reason! They have an all you can drink plan and the drink menu includes spirits, beers, and wines. In fact, a lot of the decor is wine themed with barrels and motifs around the bar. You can enjoy some good wine here with equally good food. This bar is recommended for couples or small groups.
This small bar has good drinks menu and a food menu. The kitchen here, although very small, produces a huge range of delicious dishes. A lot of the food here is perfect for a bar sitting and compliments the drink. They have olives, cheeses, prosciutto, pâté, plus salads, grilled beef, pastas, and desserts. It is amazing the small kitchen can produce so much. The main dish here though, is the grilled meat skewers, or yakitori. Sample the dozen or so meats here. Barsamico is the perfect spot for a cozy date, or a for a good night with some friends.

Shousukedon is a cozy izakaya located in Sapporo, in the Susukino district. It’s got a lot of character and has a rustic charm about it. It can be found along route 36 across from the Daiwa Roynet Hotel and is just down from the Mercure Hotel. The best thing about this small izakaya is that it has street side seating which is great during spring and especially the summer. During the winter, they have a heavy plastic cover and inside heaters to keep you warm. Shousukedon has lots of small dishes, plus meat dishes which you can cook yourself on a small open flame grill.
It’s great to sit outside and watch the street and people go buy as you chow down on some simple food and have a few beers. If you want to stay a while, they have an all you can drink plan (nomi-hodai) which goes for two hours at ¥2000. They also have whiskey, shochu, wine, bottles of sake and some nice fruit wine. The staff here are really friendly and also many of the local patrons here are often relaxed, laid back and like to chat. It is small izakayas like this that have a unique feel and are interesting, especially for travelers from foreign lands, and well worth a visit!
