Perch is a great homely coffee shop in Sapporo. It has been set up in one of the houses in area and serves not only as a cafe, but as a bar and also as an arts and crafts store! On the first floor there are comfortable chairs plus tables for larger groups, and a kitchen area where the friendly owner cooks up some nice lunches and homemade desserts. For lunch or dinners they have pastas, smoked sausages, and a delicious keema curry. There is also a selection of spirits and wines if you are looking for something stronger than coffee.
The desserts here are fantastic. The caramel pudding is homemade, as well as the cheesecake. Both are equally delicious and are the perfect accompaniment to a nice cup of coffee or tea. As well as the dining area, there is a tatami room as well that has some nice handmade crafts for sale. A nice little Japanese touch to the place. On the 2nd floor you can find some more items, handmade dolls and cups and saucers, plus Japanese memorabilia to purchase. Perch is a nice cafe/bar and is very affordable making it a good place for a quiet lunch or dinner or it even serves as a party venue for large groups if need be!

This fascinating store is a treasure trove of antiques. It can be found just off the Sakaimachi shopping road. The store is packed with interesting and unique items, and is a great place to walk around and check out the wares. They have pictures, furniture, serving ware, ornaments, and thousands of trinkets. The store is run by a friendly couple and are happy to have you peruse their store. This store not only serves as an antique boutique, but it also serves as a a cosy little tea and coffee shop!
The coffee store here makes for a quaint spot to sit and sip on something warm and enjoy the interesting surroundings. The menu, although small, is very affordable. Take the Chuo Bus Karumanuma Line (Shin-101) or Takino Line (Shin-102) from the Subway Namboku Line "Makomanai Station" and get off at "Ishiyama Higashi 3-chome". 4 minutes on foot 78 Ishiyama, Minami Ward, Sapporo, Hokkaido 005-0849 |
Ishiyama Green Space is a fantastic area to walk around, explore and relax. It has a real unearthly feel to it as the park is surrounded by sheer, white rock topped with overhanging trees. There are also beautiful and interesting sculptures placed around the park and are built into the landscape, adding to the mystique and beauty. The park was originally a soft rock mining site and in 1993 it was transformed into its current look. This park is definitely a must see during the autumn as the changing leaves add a vibrant color in contrast to the white cliffs!
The park is split into two sections with a small road dissecting the space. There is parking on both sides. The northern park has a lookout point which offers great views down the valley that leads to Jozankei. It is also on this side you can find a play area for the kids, plus there are tennis courts that can be rented out for ¥620 per hour. There is also a gateball (a kind of croquet style game) field here. The southern section of Ishiyama Green Space has paths and sculptures that wind around by ten meter white rock cliffs. This space has areas to sit, to walk around and explore this amazing space.

If you are an artist looking for art supplies, a student or teacher needing supplies for school, an office worker looking for something to spruce up the office, or even a place to grab some lunch, Central has it all! Central which is located (conveniently) in central Sapporo is right next to Parco. There are six floors in this large building. This place is hugely convenient and will cater to any supplies you need. Importantly, if you are looking pictures to be framed, then there is a framing corner to get that done. Central is really the Mecca for art supplies.
Going floor by floor let’s start at the bottom. The B1 basement floor has a huge variety of colored paper, printing paper, and personal seal stamps to buy, and a small restaurant to have some lunch. The ground floor has birthday cards, stickers and toys. The second floor has all school supplies and office supplies, things for the desk, diaries and ledgers. The third floor is packed full of art supplies, and it has a framing corner and picture frames. The fourth floor has a ramen restaurant, and Japanese arts and crafts. This floor is a secret spot for a great souvenir. The seventh floor is next for public access and has an art gallery here.

Malaika is a store that introduces handicrafts and natural materials from around the world. Their products are from all over, including Africa, the Americas, and Asia. These products have been made with traditional materials and the cultures of each country can be seen in each product, making for a fantastic store. Each staff member who works at Malaika spends time overseas in the places that these products are from. This creates a real appreciation of the culture plus it creates a personal bond between the store and its suppliers. There are four Malaika stores in Hokkaido with one in Sapporo, Asahikawa, Chitose, and Hakodate.

The Malaika stores have a great range of products. These include ornaments for decorating the house, plus sculptures, a large collection of incense sticks and some beautiful light shades. They also have a huge variety of jewelry made from many different materials and stones. If you are looking for clothing, Malaika has this too! The great thing about this store, is that the prices are decent and even if you don’t end up buy anything, it’s a good shop to wander around and look at their wares. There aren’t many shops like this around in Hokkaido so check it out!
