Cheese curry lunch set

Smile Garden Cafe can be found in the Parlor Fukuda building. It is a large restaurant that happily serves up lunch to the visitors and guests of the Lake Toya Onsen area. Being in the centre of town it is easily to drop in while seeing the sights, and enjoying the area. This restaurant also serves as the entrance to the classic car gallery next door, simply ask the friendly staff. This large restaurant has plenty of seating and is good for families or large groups.

Homely surroundings

The restaurant has pictures and has English translations making it easy to order your meal. The menu has mainly rice and pasta dishes such as delicious rice curries, chicken doria (a Japanese style casserole dish with cream sauce), pilafs, and pizzas. The lunch set menu has three options which comes with a drink, a salad, and a chocolate cake dessert! You can savor your meal in homely surroundings. You can also enjoy cakes and the tea & coffee menu. Smile Garden Cafe also has a small stand, selling homemade items that you can take a look at.

Wisteria orchard

The Ko Park Camping Ground can be found on the northern shores of Lake Toya. It a nice strip of grassland where you can pitch your tent, overlooking the placid water of the lake. By the campground there are sculptures, a wisteria orchard, a beach area, plus a small shrine, and a nice walking path around the grounds. It is also within a five minute walk to Ukimido Park. The campground is easily accessed via the road, and there is a parking lot right next the grounds.

The campground has toilet facilities and also a garbage disposal area to keep the area clean. Everyday, the ground staff (wearing orange jackets) will come around and charge the fee depending on your size of tent, so keep your wallet handy. When it comes to food, fires contained within a cooking stove is allowed. There is a convenience store about a ten minute walk away. Across from the campground is a Vietnamese restaurant (though often closed), and a Japanese izakaya, and also, down the road is Cafe Lake Toya. Last but not least, at 20:45 there is a fireworks display which can be seen on the other side of the lake. The fireworks display is held every night, except for winter.

Nice little garden inside the walls

Throughout the city of Sapporo, there are around a dozen buddhist temples that visitors can take a look at. These beautiful temples are iconic of Japan and its long history. For tourists they are great spots to get some great photos to take home. Jodoshu Shinzenko Temple is one of these temples. It is located in central Sapporo, in the southern district of Susukino. There are four other temples within a ten minute walking distance from Jodoshu Shinzenko. The gates are open to the public, where you can enter and take a stroll around the courtyard.

Beautiful Japanese style garden

The temple of Shinzenko has over a hundred years of history, being built in 1884. It is here, the teaching of the jodo sect focuses on the “ritual recitation of the Nembutsu” (meaning the follower is opening themselves up to light and salvation). Followers believe this recitation benefits not just the speaker, but the entire world as well. There are three floors inside the temple itself and include up to one thousand burial urns. Throughout the year, the temple has special Buddhist ceremonies on their calendar. Being in the entertainment district, the temple is not a far walk from the Susukino and Nakajima Koen subway stations making it an easy place to access.

Pool table area

In Sapporo, located on the southern end of Susukino (the nightlife district), you can find the Stingray bar. It’s a cool bar sporting a retro look with early rock themes. They have a pool table, pinball machine and a duke box to rock out on. There is plenty of seating and standing room for small groups or large parties. Alternatively, pull up a stool at the counter, have a beer and chat to the friendly bar staff. Bar Stingray is located above ‘Studio 810’ which is a live house for bands.

Whenever a band has a gig at Studio 810, Bar Stingray will live feed it on their screens in the bar area, so you can enjoy a drink and get an idea of which band is playing downstairs. When it comes to the beer menu, they have Sapporo and Carlsberg on tap. Bottled beers include Budweiser, Corona, Heineken, Suntory, and Asahi. They also have Japanese sakes from around Japan, such as Lotus and Mitake to enjoy, plus wines and spirits. The food menu includes usual bar fare, including hamburgers, spicy tacos, and duck pastrami. There is a party plan, and Bar Stingray can be rented out for group parties.
